Upgrade doesn't work

I just download the new version of limewire
I am running with Mac OS 9.1
Just after launching, now i have the message error:

Unable to locate the application's 'main' class. The class 'com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main' must be public and have a 'public static void main(String[])' method. (LAX)

What can I do now ?
I can't anymore use Limewire....

Than'ks for your help

I have encountered the same problem. I reported the bug, but am still looking for some way to solve the problem. Help!

mas April 12th, 2003 12:54 PM

Same problem. I guess no one is going to answer our question. How do I get the old version again? This sucks!

CherylP April 12th, 2003 01:24 PM

Wow, hindsight is 20/20. I wish I'd bothered to read these before I uninstalled my old version, and tried to install the new one. I'm getting the same thing. *sigh*

C'mon guys, let us know if you're doing anything to fix it?

tmacj19 April 12th, 2003 03:40 PM

Same problem here. Wish someone from Limewire Support would help us out or else we might have to utilize another program. Hard to find decent ones for MAC. Also, the older version has stopped working for me. Had no choice but to try and upgrade and upgrading prevent me from going back to the older version. What a shame.

Dark Lady April 12th, 2003 04:00 PM

I FIGURED IT OUT !

I went into my files and found one call .limewire and I threw it out. then I launched Limewire and it RAN !!!!!

tmacj19 April 12th, 2003 05:28 PM

Did you have the same error message as listed above? I tried it and it didn't work.

Hello!

Hello!

did you have LW turned off when doing the operation?

Have you Re-started your Mac afterwards and then tryed to launch LW?

You could also try this:

Go to:

Macintosh HD>System Folder>Program Preferences>.limewire folder

move that one to the trash but dont empty your trash.

Now Re-start your mac and then see if LW will launch!.

Dark Lady April 12th, 2003 09:07 PM

I think i fixed it

after 24 agonizing hours, i think I got it ! I was searching for limewire preferences and i found a file ".limewire" so i threw it in the trash and now limewire (so far) seems to be working ! Try it.:D

Dark Lady April 12th, 2003 09:18 PM

still no fix

I've the same problem, with the same error message. I'm using a Mac G4 Cube with System OS J1-9.2.2 (in other words Japanese language 9.2.2).

So I followed all the posts above - checked the Lax file and threw away the .limewire folder from the preferences. Restarted, but I still get the same error message.

Help!!!!!

trap_jaw April 13th, 2003 02:42 AM

There is not much you can improve by throwing away the preferences file (unless you messed up the options really good).

becky April 13th, 2003 02:49 AM

Still working!

I just tried to download the update, but the icon that had appeared on my desktop during the download disappeared and I was left with a folded-corner sheet of paper icon. When I clicked on it, I got the message "The document "LimeWireMac.bin" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found".

Luckily I hadn't deleted my files. So mine appears to be working for now, despite the dire warning that I wouldn't be able to connect. Hope somebody figures this thing out for us.

themuzza April 13th, 2003 04:56 AM

I have tried doing everything suggested and my limewire still doesn't work...please help!!

d03 April 13th, 2003 05:05 AM

i'm having the same problem and nothing works. is there any other useful information that will actually work?

"Get LimeWire 2.9.8!"

... I tried to, I got the same error. It tried to open the file in ACDSee (my image viewer) then said: "The file "LimeWireMac.bin" is damaged or in an unreadable format."

So I tried to reinstall the old version, and get the same things as before. When I click the "Details", I get:

java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main
at com.zerog.lax.LAX.launch(Compiled Code)
at com.zerog.lax.LAX.main(Unknown Source)
at com.apple.mrj.JManager.JMStaticMethodDispatcher.ru n(JMAWTContextImpl.java)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java)

Does that help any? I'm getting frustrated with this, I've tried the suggestions with the limewire.lax file, or whatever it was back there... restarted... replaced the whole file with the text in that reply... restarted... uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted... *pulls hair out* heh =)

:( But I do thank everyone for all their suggestions thus far, it helps to know someone's actually trying to help.

Mustang Boy April 13th, 2003 11:38 AM

I like wise have tried all that has been suggested. with the prefernce and lax thingy. nothing
I agree with CherylP, thanks for the help
Please, lets get this figured out:)

trap_jaw April 13th, 2003 12:29 PM

Try LimeWire 2.9.7 or 2.9.8 (not 2.9.8.2).

delete the .bin file extension then launch it again, select open with stuffit expander

SUCCESS!!!!!! I finally got a working version. try Trapjaw's suggestions and download 2.9.8. It works. Wasn't able to have any luck wiht the 2.9.7.

Hello!

All people well almost all people that uses LimeWire on Classical Mac OS 9.1 or above uses that path. But anyway changing the content of the LAX file obviously dont work. Finally we are getting somewhere with this issue. It seems that the second version of 2.9.8 the so called 2.9.8.2 is corrupt and are missing some files or have faulty code lines and are basically corrupt and does not work atleast not the Classical Mac OS version. The simple solution is to do what trap_jaw suggested and download and install the first version of 2.9.8 instead. Which is available here:

http://www3.limewire.com/download/2.9.8/

Finally a temporary solution but the LimeWire team must do some fixing work for the next update.

CherylP April 13th, 2003 05:56 PM

FINALLY! :) Yes, it worked for me too. *hops up and down* Thank you everyone.

To the person that had the "damaged file" message, I dragged it and dropped it on the Stuffit Expander alias I had... and it worked.

But yeah, only 2.9.8 worked, I guess I assumed that when I clicked on download, that was the version it was downloading. :) 2.9.7 didn't work for me either.

So yeah! Thanks so much guys, I was going nuts not being able to dl any music. ;) You're all wonderful.

CherylP April 13th, 2003 06:09 PM

Now I'm back to square one. "Disconnected / no files available"... which ironically, is the reason I was trying to download a newer version in the first place, to see if it would fix that problem. *grin*

Ah, the wonderful world of computers.

If anyone knows the answer to that, I'm all ears. I assume I need to add more servers, or something? I'll go post it in a more appropriate group though... :)

Hello!

Since it is the first time that you are running the newly downloaded LW it will hash and index your files if you share any files. It can take quite some time the first time to get the green light indicating a successfull connection to a UltraPeer. So just be patient and see if it will connect after a couple of minutes. And during this time you should watch the things that happens under the Connection tab. Here you can monitor all connection attempts. About 90% of the connection attempts should fail with 10% beeing successfull. When you have 3 connections going out to 3 UltraPeers then LW has successfully connected.

becky April 14th, 2003 02:43 AM

Finally Back in Business! Whew!

Well, I tried superduck 94's suggestion and deleted the .bin file extension. Worked like a charm. I installed LimeWire, but then COULDN'T OPEN IT! Something about not being able to read the Java script. This was not a good thing, since my version had worked before I took his advice.

As a last resort, not expecting to have any luck at all, I tried Joakim Agren's link to v. 2.9.8. Went through the download process again, deleted the .bin. file extension. and this time everything sorted itself out. Don't know how. Don't know why. Just know I'm happy. :)

So thanks to superduck for the .bin tip, and to Joakim for the 2.9.8 link to use it on!
