Hello!

Are you sure that you are downloading mp3 files? They might be .ram files that only Real Player plays. If they are mp3 files then this might be the result of a newly installed new version of Real player and during installation the RP installer will ask you if you want to make it the default media player. You should have answered no to this question. If you answered yes then you have to uninstall everything Real Player on your System and once again install it and when prompted during installation answer no. And then the problem should be gone. If you have the proper settings in the File Exchange Control Panel as you state is properly set then mp3 files should be playing in either iTunes if you are using it which you should or Quicktime.

One thing that you could try directly is to drop one of those files directly in a playlist in iTunes and see if they will show up there and are playable.
