NOTHING I Do Will Get Rid Of RealAudio! I re-installed Quicktime 6, I trashed every Real file, and I changed the Fil Exchange control panel, and I'm still downloading RealAudio files. What do I do?!?!?! |
Which OS? |
Hello! Are you sure that you are downloading mp3 files? They might be .ram files that only Real Player plays. If they are mp3 files then this might be the result of a newly installed new version of Real player and during installation the RP installer will ask you if you want to make it the default media player. You should have answered no to this question. If you answered yes then you have to uninstall everything Real Player on your System and once again install it and when prompted during installation answer no. And then the problem should be gone. If you have the proper settings in the File Exchange Control Panel as you state is properly set then mp3 files should be playing in either iTunes if you are using it which you should or Quicktime. One thing that you could try directly is to drop one of those files directly in a playlist in iTunes and see if they will show up there and are playable. |
Well, I'm running OS 8.6, so I don't have iTunes. Guess I'll try re-installing RealPlayer again and post results here. Thanks! |
I re-installed RealPlayer, made sure that it wasn't set as the default player, double checked File Exchange, and I'm still not getting working mp3's. |
How big are the .mp3's ? Have you tried drag/dropping them on the Quicktime movie player? (Joakim know more about this kind of problem . . .) |

So you are using a pre 9 version of Mac OS. That make things a little more complicated. Basically you should try the following: Make sure that they are mp3 files first by checking their file sizes individually. If a single one of them is for instance a 3 minutes or longer song then it should be about 3MB or larger in size. To check its file size do the following highlight the file and then from the File menu select Show Info>General info and in the window that appears look at how large Mac OS tells you that it is. Then you could also just open up Quicktime and from the file menu select open new window then select from the file menu once again open new movie and select one of those mp3's and see if it will play. The best option however is to get a proper mp3 player that will function in Mac OS 8.6 unfortunatelly there is none that is as good as iTunes but atleast there is some options available for instance: Air Whisper 1.3 probably the best lightweight player available for Mac OS 8.6. You can get it from here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/15303 |
Well, these files are downloading as Quicktime Movie icons, and changing them to .mp3 or using Quicktime to 'File, open' them isn't working. But when I do try and open them, I get an error message saying "Couldn't open file T-398753 because it isn't a file that Quicktime understands." The T-378964 message makes it sound like a RealPlayer file. I'd like to download another player as a last resort....I just wanna fix LimeWire! |

You should download and use a different player since Quicktime player can only play one file at the time and has no such things as a playlist etc. Quicktime is mainly for movies and not adapted for music library playing. Air Whisper(the link provided in my post above) is a good one I have heard!. I can see one other problem with your files. Their file names start with a T followed by some numbers. Those numbers are the file size in bytes and the T indicates that LW was not finished downloading them. The T stands for Transferred for instance T-378964 means that 378694 bytes or simply around 378kB was transferred to your computer before it was interrupted simply an incomplete mp3 file. Another factor that might prevent QT from playing them is if the .mp3 file exstension is missing. The best thing you could do is to once again search for the same file in question and then once again initiate a download and if you find it and make a succesfull connection LW will once again download it. And if you put the current file in the incomplete folder before opening LW and downloading a new file LW will actually remember/see the file as an incomplete download and if the file you found and initiated a download is exactly the same(indicated by file name and exact same file size) as the one that you now have LW will start where it left off the last time so you will get a complete mp3 file that should be playable by QT. |
378KB are spam, probably with names like "awesome". DON'T download or share those! Completed files are in the shared folder. Nothing will play those files: the names are spoofed and often can contain a virus that hurts PC users. As Joakim said, a real mp3 will be about 3-4 MEGS. The T-number refers to the final size of the file, no? |
