What's wrong!?

I am using mac os9.2 and recently installed limewire.
It worked when I launched the program for the first time, but once I quit the program, I cannot even start it. It just quits automatically.
Is this because I'm using broadband?
Please Help!

Hi

The nature of your connection to the internet is not relevant. Indeed, Limewire as a package should load even though your machine is disconnected from the net. So your problem is most likely with the installation itself. I suggest that you uninstall and trash all the "Limew" elements you can find. Then, with a clean slate, download the latest version and see whether that loads. If that does not work, I recall that there were incompatibilties between some of the later LW upgrades and OS9 because of the version of Java used in the early version of OS9. Post back if reinstallation does not work, and I will give you the address for downloading a version of Limewire which I know to work on OS9. To explain — it is better to use the most recent versions of LW if you can. Older versions are being phased out and soon will not interface with Gnutella. Hence, reliance on older versions of LW is, at best, a temporary fix.

Let's take you back to an earlier version. I have good memories of 2.8.6 when I was on OS9.2. You will find it at http://www3.limewire.com/download/2.8.6/

Again, this should be installed on a clean slate so trash everything with "limew" in its label before downloading.

ouch.

The installer still does not work...
by the way everytime i try to install. it makes the file called "InstallAnywhere SEA.log" in Trash.
i feel like givin up LW now. so does anyone know similar software to LW?

Hmmm

The download should come to you in a compressed form as a Stuffit file. Stuffit is a standard component in the Mac bundle and you do report that you were able to unpack the first version of Limewire you downloaded which would confirm its presence. Are you certain that you have not downloaded a version of Limewire to your HD? If Finder locates it, you should be able to use Stuffit to uncompress it. If nothing has been downloaded, that would suggest either something seriously wrong with your download manager or with the save to disk routine and running a system repair through Utilities might be a good idea.

nothing wrong with stuffit

im using quite a lot of virtual memory from HD. does it matter?

David91 May 31st, 2003 12:41 PM

Ah!

There was a memory problem with Limewire in earlier Mac OSs. Needless to say, the problem was resolved when OSX appeared because the virtual memory automatically resets itself. However, since we cannot get you to a successful installation, this is a bit academic, no?

thats it.

i think ive tried everythin i can do, so im gonna give it up.
since ive got windows as well, i can still use winmx to share files.
thank u very much for your help David91.
