I'm running out of ideas. Well then, did you download DivX yet? DivX runs avis I believe. If you download, designate DivX as your default AVI player. Try that; we'll see if it works.

This goes without saying, but what we're going into is beyond what Limewire support really covers. As in, we're really not talking about limewire, but something you downloaded about limewire. I should say, just legally of course, that whatever you downloaded I assume you downloaded legally, etc., etc.

open the file even though it says the right compressor can't be found. If it says that the format is IV5 or IV32 or something, do a search on that with google and download a codec. If it says something else is the format, go to 3ivx.com and download the 3ivx codec, and then go to download divx doctor II which converts avi to mov (you need this if you want sound on your movie)here

thanx sebdude ill try that out

joeshmo June 28th, 2003 09:56 AM

this is kinda weird bu even though it says that the file is an avi, when i look at the quicktime movie info it says that the format is MPG4.

I also tried going to 3ivx.com and downloading the divx doctor 2.1 - it gave me an error when i tried to "fix" the simpsons episode it apparently is not an avi as it was labled, but an MPG4

I do have the 3ivx D4 4.04 for Mac OS9

can i decode the MPG4 with what i have or does that require additional software?

sebdude June 28th, 2003 12:11 PM

As far as I know avi isn't a format, just a container. 3ivx is an mpeg-4 codec so it should decode your file. What kind of error do you get when putting the file in Divx Doctor?

Blackbird June 28th, 2003 12:16 PM

The latest QT can read mpeg4.

joeshmo June 28th, 2003 03:42 PM

first of all, i wanna get something straight: are mpg and mpeg the same thing or are they different formats that come in one container or is mpg a container for mpeg or vice-versa?

This is the error as it appears in the error log after i have doctored the specific avi i downloaded:

DivX Doctor II Shutting Down

DivX Doctor II (2.1) Starting Up

Doctoring AVI
FILE = Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Shared:Simpsons - Mojo the #13F85.avi
ERROR: Building Repaired AVI
FILE = Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Shared:Simpsons - Mojo the #13F85.avi
ERR = -223,
ERROR: Doctoring AVI
FILE = Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Shared:Simpsons - Mojo the #13F85.avi
ERR = -223,
ERROR: Error while Doctoring
FILE = Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Shared:Simpsons - Mojo the #13F85.avi
ERR = -223,

it doesnt make much sense to me but its repeated about 3 times in the error log

also, one more thought - the problem might be just as simple as the particular avi i downloaded was somehow corrupted so i think ill try downloading and launching another avi and see if that doesnt work.

sebdude June 28th, 2003 03:45 PM

mpg and mpeg is the same thing, mpg is just a shorter name.
What is the size of the file? (don't ask why I wanna know)

sebdude June 28th, 2003 04:01 PM

I just downloaded that file (for the purpose of helping you only, don't wanna break any copyright infrigments) It didn't play for me either and said mpg4 as the format. I'll check around the 3ivx forum to find a solution.

sebdude June 28th, 2003 04:08 PM

VLC plays the video, but not the audio. It says the codec is ms (stupid Micro$oft) so I guess you should just find something else.
