A Strange Problem Hello...my first post ! When I download .sit files, sometimes they are called a "Limewire document"in the download folder and I cant unstuff them or do anything with them. In the Limewire library, however, they are displayed as.sit files. (No problems with mp3s.) Does anyone know what the problem is here? I've read the FAQ. Limewire 2.9.8 Mac OS 9.2.1 No firewalls, etc. Thanks for your help!!! |
This usually means that the invisible Finder Desktop files that match documents to applications is missing a connection. There are a few things you can do. First--make sure your stuffit is up to date. You can always drag the .sits onto stuffit expander to open them. With luck, this will set the expander prefs automatically, otherwise go into the stuffit expander prefs to set stuffit to open the .sits. Rebuilding the desktop (holding down command and option just before the hard drive loads onto the desktop in the startup sequence) is another way to match applications and their files (thought this was unnecessary in OS 9). Then, get the latest LimeWire. The developers have made lots of good changes since 2.9.8 Cheers--nice clear first post! |
Rebuilding the desktop helped most of them.Excellent! I'm still having trouble with an .dmg file, but maybe the file is no good. I will get the latest Stuffit and Limewire. Thanks for your prompt response. :) |
You're welcome. Some .dmg files are OS X only. You can try dragging it onto Disk Copy to see if that works (I think I once read of someone changing .dmg to .img or vice versa). What kind of Mac are you using? |
I'm using a G3/233 w/Sonnett G3/500 upgrade ( works great,BTW), 384 Mg RAM. i tried dragging the .dmg onto the disk copy icon... no go. Maybe it is an X file. Thanks. |
OK. I just wondered if you could boot into OS X to try the .dmg, but it doesn't sound like an easy or good idea. Oh well. email me if you really want to get at the file--I'm getting off topic. Cheeers |
