Can't run won't run

I decided to upgrade to the latest version of L/W. The installation (says it) runs fine. But when I try to run the program it unexpectedly quits with a type 1 error. No matter how much memory I allocate, this happens and I've tried the usual things: reinstall, clean install, redownload...

The older version worked OK.

I'm running OS9.2.2 on a G4.

Any ideas?

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=55743 says that's a memory error, and to also look for an extensions conflict. Allocate LW as much memory as you can (I've set mine for 100 megs when in OS 9). I'm waiting for an answer from pro support about how much memory is optimal, and for advice on how much to give the Apple Applet Runner (in the MRJ 2.2.5 folder). I've given MRJ 64 megs too, but I don't know if that helps.

MarkTabet November 24th, 2003 01:05 AM

I tried giving limewire 200mb of RAM and MRJ 100Mb and still no joy.

urban_banjaara December 2nd, 2003 12:04 PM

Are you using Multiple Users? I had a conflict with Multiple Users and Limewire. I just had to turn MU off and then restart, and Limewire worked fine.

MarkTabet December 4th, 2003 03:22 AM

No I'm not using Multiple Users.

The galling thing is that the old version worked (albeit very slowly) but I no longer have the installer to 'downgrade' with.

Hi Mark. Here's the answer from Pro Support
Quote:

It really does not matter how much memory is allocated for LimeWire, as long as you have at least 128MB RAM installed on your system. You do not need to do anything to the Apple Applet Runner, to get LimeWire working.
So looks like an extension conflict would be the next area to try, since you already cleaned out all the old stuff and tried a fresh install.

Try turning off Fax extensions first.
btw--Apple modified the MRJ page recently http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209
Maybe reinstall MRJ 2.2.5?

MarkTabet December 8th, 2003 08:58 AM

Thanks for the suggestions but still no joy - i've tried running under OS9.2.2 only extensions and that didn't solve the problem, nor did reinstalling MRJ.

Same problem as Mark

Hey Mark,

I have same problem as you....Did you figure anything out?

Thanks:(

pvc December 8th, 2003 04:33 PM

Me three. Same problem. Exactly.

stief December 8th, 2003 08:07 PM

Gees you guys--between the four of us (and others who can chip in), we should be able to track this down!

How about a clean install (again?) and make sure all the Java pieces are where they are supposed to be? jottagirl found an odd situation where the MRJ pieces were misplaced:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...8843#post78843

To trash all LimeWire pieces and preferences, use Sherlock to search for both visible and invisible "limew".

I'll boot into 9 and see if I can find the minimum extensions needed to run LW (I still suspect an extension conflict).

MarkTabet December 9th, 2003 01:01 AM

Hey guys thanks for the messages - I was starting to think maybe it was just me.

edfarris and pvc: sorry I still haven't found a cure.

stief: I've tried clean installs (using the supplied uninstaller which seems pretty thorough) but still no joy.

I'll give jottagirl's info a look and come back to you.

Mark.

stief December 9th, 2003 05:29 AM

Mark--the uninstaller doesn't touch the '.limewire' folder in the System->Preferences. Use Sherlock to search your HD for "limew" to find it. Sometimes the "Shared folder" is in there, so look through the trash for any files you want to keep before trashing.

Also, which installer were you using? The alternate Classic installer (Mac No VM) is under the "Other" button http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...oadother.shtml

Possible solution

This may not make sense to anyone,(It certainly doesn't to me) but I restarted my computer using the Norton startup disk (I didn't even run Disk Doctor) then restarted back to my regular disk and LW suddenly, inexplicably, ran fine. Perhaps some preferences were reset or ...who knows? I don't even know if the fact that it was Norton is relevant- maybe any other startup disk will do the same thing. Worth a shot, no?

Stief,

Deleting the ".limewire" preferences folder hasn't made a difference; nor does it matter which installer I use (with VM or withour).

Funnily enough, on my travels I have found an installer for Pro 2.7.9 which runs (albeit like molasses going uphill)!

I looked into jottagirl's thing and I appear to be missing MRJ Enabler and swingall.jar. I don't know whether they're important but I just don't have them.

PVC: I haven't had a chance to try your Norton suggestion.

Looks like I just joined the club.

I'm running 4.5 on a G3/233 - well, I use the term "running" in its loosest sense. More like crawling.

But it won't run on my "new" (just bought) G4/400 with 1Gb of RAM installed.

Error type 1, like everyone else.

FaxSTF application appears to be installed but there's no control panel.

I let LW install the latest Java thingy. Maybe that was a mistake?

Ho hum. Back to the G3. I'll put the kettle on.

CSApilot December 21st, 2003 04:39 AM

Just anther would be user here just amaized to read others have been having the same problems. I've tried every options suggested here, and still nothing. I'd been running LW just fine when one day the hideious Error type 1 message shows up. No matter what I try, I get the same thing. What I don't understand is that I hadn't installed anything that could cause an extension conflict proir to this, or done anything out of the ordianry, when it stopped working. I've tried "downgrading" but I get a message saying what I've installed is too old to work with the upgrades made to the LW network. I have a PowerBook G4, running 9.2.2

MarkTabet December 22nd, 2003 03:25 AM

How far back are you downgrading?

Do you have the means to downgrade to a more recent version?

Mark.

Bag 3.6.15

Sorry for the delay in getting back on this. Alas, I just gave up on getting this version to work on my PowerBook G4. It seems to work on my Blue &White G3, which, ironically, also runs 9.2.2, but on the G3 all seems fine. I've decided it MUST be some kind of extension conflict, but I'll be *#!@!! if I can find it!! I'm just going to bag attempting to get this version to work on the G4 & wait till another version is released. This one's not worth the agrivation.
