Mac OS upgrade to 10.3 Panther

I'm running Mac OS 9.2.2 on my G3 iMac, but want to upgrade to Panther 10.3. the postings list disk 1, disk 2, and disk 3...what do I need to install over the Classic OS? Can I still use my v.9 programs, or will those have to be upgraded too?
