Macintosh: Unable to install LW 1.6

1 Attachment(s)
I've attempted to install limewire 1.6 multiple tiems on my Macintosh and still haven't succeeded.

The first time through, the Installer had me install a newer copy of Java. (MRJ 2.2.3 IIRC). After installing MRJ, I rebooted and attempted to install LW by running the installer again; no luck.

Since then I've tried different tacks, going so far as to install MRJ 2.2.5 directly from the Apple web site, get a new copy of Stuffit (6.0.1, just in case the LW installer needed it), etc.

When I run the installer, the installer gives a message about unpacking the installer itself and creates temp files (which appear in the Trash). The installer then gives a message which states that it's about to run the installation program -- and then quits. No installation, no message.

If I leave the temp files around and reboot the machine and re-run the installer, all I get is another copy of the temp files in the Trash. I have re-downloaded the installer from different places on the off-chance that the installer itself was corrupt, but it doesn't help.

The log file in the Trash contains cryptic messages ("Zero fill is not zero") that seem to indicate an error, but the log file doesn't actually state that this is a fatal error. I do see a comment "marking file for launching," which makes me believe that the installion was at least partially successful. The installer does not make an alias in my Startup Items folder.

My system: an ancient PPC 601/60 with a G3 upgrade card, running MacOS 8.5.1. I've got sufficient disk space and memory to install to the best of my knowledge -- I can't find installation requirements listed anywhere, but I'll guess that LW doesn't need more than 3 MB (given that the MRJ component in the installer is probably 5 MB all by itself and the installer is 8 MB).

From reading this newsgroup I decduce that others have been successful in installing LW on the Mac, and I can't figure out what my problem is here. Suggestions, anyone?

I would give the new Mac beta installer a shot at:

http://www.limewire.com/beta/1.6b/mac

The new installer is simplified significantly, and may work better for you. If it does not work, then there is probably some incompatability between InstallAnywhere (the installer program that we are using on the Mac) and something in your configuration.

That's really the best we can do for now. We unfortunately cannot make the installers and more straightforward (any more less reliant on having some specific configuration on your end) without moving to completely different install programs.

Still fails silently

A,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the installation still fails silently. I append the log file.

I guess I am simply out of luck... I will try LW again in the next revision to see what happens, and/or fiddle with my configuration. If I come up with a solution I will post it & email it to you.

I'm sorry to hear that the new installer did not work. We may try to switch to a different installer on the Mac at some point, but this will not be happening in the immediate future.

I would reccommend giving Mactella a try. LimeWire's java architecture makes it a bit frustrating to use on older Mac's, as it experiences significant performance problems. Good luck.

Trying to install..but won't

/b I downloaded Limewire and when went to install..it said something about Java...but didnt install..all said was quit...Im on a Mac G3 and have the latest version of java (i think)...can someone tell me...am i doing something wrong?

The first time you run the installer, it installs the latest version of Java if you need it installed.

After installing Java, you should reboot the Mac. If the installer doesn't automatically start up again after the reboot, you should try restarting the installer manually. The installer will then walk you through the rest of the installation.

Of course my knowledge is somewhat hypothetical, since LM won't install on my machine. If when you run the installer the 2nd timet (a) files appear in your trash and (b) the installer just quits and doesn't run, then your installation has failed silently. If so, try downloading the beta installer mentioned in this thread.

If the beta installer doesn't work, post complete information about your machine (model number, OS version, do you have a G3 upgrade card?). It won't do you any good but maybe next time around someone will figure out what the problem is...
