limewire is too slow for me
 

I have a mac OS 8.6 and my limewire is running unbareabley slow for me. Does anybody have any ideas on how to help improve the speed?

LimeWire, as many users have noted, can freeze quite frequently on the Macintosh (pre-OSX). The best solution to the problem is to increase the memory allocated to LimeWire to 40 megs or more if you have it.

This problem is caused by the implementation of Java on the Macintosh. Non-programmers can ignore this, but the problem arises in part from the fact that the Macintosh (again pre-OSX) version of Java uses cooperative threads instead of preemtive threads. LimeWire relies heavily on threads, which adversely affects performance on the Mac. This is a tricky problem, however, as multithreading is now a vital tool in any major application's arsenal, vastly improving the user experience on other versions of Java that use stronger threading models.

I just thought I would throw that in in case anyone was interested. OK, in reality I'm a loser writing into the company I work for's forum at midnight on a Thursday evening.

thanks for the suggestion but my memory is sorted by k, so exactly how many k's would it take for it to add up to a meg? I've never been really good at converting anything so I'd appreciate it if somebody could help me out with that.

1,000 kilobytes = 1 megabytes

Just to be precise about this (I know it's a little anal, but I can't help it), it's really:

1,024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte.

For practical purposes, however, it much easier to think of in terms of TruStarwarrior's conversion.

Optimizing for Mac
 

I'm running Mac OS 8.6 on a 266mHz G3 and have had similar problems, with LimeWire experiencing "attacks" during which the whole system freezes up for several seconds or minutes. I've found these can be minimized by:

1. Making sure you have the most recent version of Apple's MRJ.

2. Using a maximum of 5 open connections.

Increasing program memory didn't help me much, but I didn't go as high as 40 megs. A lot of older Mac users (that's users of older Macs, not older users of Macs) might not have that much to spare.

LimeWire definitely works much smoother on Mac OSX.
