Unhappy ..new to LimeWire... having problems...

Hiya! I was going to get kazaa but was advised otherwise to get limewire.

I just installed it and everything seems to be working fine, no crashes or anything. I downloaded 2 PDFs and a JPG. I go to library and press lauch to the jpg it does it fine and everything works and the pic pops up. But when I click "launch" to the pdfs nothing happens.... they are 100% downloaded... I think I am doing everything right, I had a quick look through the instructions.

-It's 9.2.1 or 9.2.0.... not sure which.
-Broadband internet. I think I said modem or cable... oh dear, I can;t remember which one I said for my connection
-classic mac limewire
-it's not PRO limewire
-I have imac purchased in late2001/early2002 and is a "deep" blue colour(probably dosen't help... but I did talk to one imac expert who could tell what my compuet was by the colour..)

sorry if I'm just missing something obvious, because the chances are, I have.

Could someone pelase help? again, sorry if there is nothing wrong at all with LW and I'm just not reading instructins carefully enough.... my excuse is I have never tried one of these type things before :lol

I found that the "Launch" button doesn't work for me all that well in version 4.0.5 so instead I double-click on the download in the "Downloads" window. This is IMO a more direct way of telling a file to launch so if it doesn't, post back.
Remember to wait a little if it doesn't launch right away. It may take some time depending on configurations.

When you aren't dlding anything then the dld window is not present. It only comes up if there's a dld to display.

Btw, Kazaa is one of the most commonly known p2p apps out there. It is also quite possibly the worst. Besides, it's not available for Mac, but that's not a big deal: I can't tell you how many friends I have whose PCs where screwed up because of Kazaa.

Ummm... sorry to sound like I have computer skils of a 78 year old... BUUUT what do you mean by a new window when I'm downloading something? when I'm downloading something it shows the progress (20%, 50%, 90%, etc) and th searching all on the same window, like in this diagram:

Yes, that is what I meant: if there are no dlds running then you'll notice that the place where the dlds are usually listed dissapears (at least in the 4.0 series). When you dld a file (movies and music, not applications) and wanna preview it to see if it's the file you want before the dld is over, then just double click on the dld and the file should start playing.

Don't go through the Library. Manually look for the files in the Finder: They should be in Home-> Shared or whatever folder has been specified as shared in Limewire->Options->saving. Go there and try opening them thru there.
I've never tried opening .pdfs myself so it may be that LW does not open these (like it does not open apps)

. . . .try dragging the .pdf files to the Acrobat Reader on OS 9. Acrobat usually has preferences to make it the default application for .pdf files too.

I was very almost going to suggest the same thing a while ago, but thought it was too basic a suggestion for mac users. However, this is true for any file you download (excluding stuffed & image files), that you try them out immediately by dragging & dropping the file onto your application. I had the problem with LW2 (in OS 8) that many files would have Limewire as the creator of the file. This seemed to confuse StuffIt Deluxe & some other apps. If I double-clicked the file, Limewire would open. I either manually unstuffed them or used Mac Army Knife to adjust their file attributes. Particularly in OS 9 the icon & file's attributes can be very sensitive towards which app opens it. PDF's are a typical example. OSX PDF's don't necessarily open with Acrobat if you double-click them & may lack an Acrobat icon.
