this once-beloved program is making me crazy

Help!

I had version 1.4 of limewire installed on my Mac Powerbook G3, and it was definitely buggy: nothing major, but the interface would occasionally do odd things. I was very happy with it, and thrilled with the ever-increasing number of users.

I recently erased that version and installed 1.6b, and I have been having a terrible time. It is _extraordinarily_ slow (I will type a keyword into the search box, and three letters will show up, but I will have to wait as long as 30 minutes for the rest of the word become visable); an annoyance, but not a enormous problem in and of itself. I'd live with it, I suppose. Unfortunately the program also gets hung everytime that I use it. If I resize the window, it crashes. It crashes as I type words into the search window. When I do make it to downloading, it crashes. Anything that I do--typing, scrolling, searching, resizing, changing windows--causes my entire computer to freeze.

I've downloaded the installer a number of times: typically it has me go through the setup, and then freezes. I restart my computer, click Limewire, and go through the setup again. Then, if I'm lucky, I'll manage to get halfway through a download before it freezes. I restart again, click the Limewire icon, and then have to go through the setup yet again. I've been working steadily at this all weekend and I have yet to get the program functioning.

Is it possible to get a copy of 1.4b? I haven't been able to find any early versions on the limewire website, and the few urls that have been recommended by others have not worked for me. Perhaps someone could email the 1.4 installer?

It sounds like something's wrong with your Java install. Have you tried manually re-installing the latest version of Java (v1.3.1?) on your Mac?
