MacOS9 download sticks on "saving file", no :complete

Just bought LW pro. I can download, LW verifies contents, but then sticks on "saving file" and will not move to "complete" stage.

also: I got an error message which appeared to be sent to LW. I reviewed it and it said contained info on my OS and I think the word "java" somewhere.

I am a basic user at best. Any info greatly appreciated

It should be your Java then. You must uninstall yours and dld and install the latest from www.java.com

Many thanks,

I just downloaded mrj 2.2.5. It's currently uninstalled and sitting on my desktop. How do I find/delete the old java? How do I install the new one? Please bear in mind that, in computer terms, I'm as green as the come.

note: when downloading mrj I got an "unwrapping error". Nothing surprises me anymore. It seems like everything I do results in a new problem. I dont trust myself to do anything, so could deleting my "old" java" and replacing it with 2.2.5. cause any further problems?

sooper frustrated,
Chuck from Canada

Which version of OS 9 do you have, it makes a difference? A different version of Java is required for OS 9.2.1 & earlier.

ie: MRJ 2.2.6 for OS 9.2.2
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209

MRJ 2.2.5 for OS 8.1-9.2
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75097

Mac version...

from system profiler:
Mac vers. 9.0.4us
4mb disc cache
129mb virtual memory
128mb built in memory
file sharing off

murasame September 3rd, 2004 01:34 PM

It could be that your RAM is too low.
128? Hmm...
But, before doing anything, redld Java to see if you still get the error.

Thanks to both of you. I just need to find out how to uninstall the existing jave and install the new version. I know that's rookie-stuff so no big deal. I'll figure it out eventually. Thank you again for the help.

Well, I've got mrj 2.2.5 installed and I'm having the same problem.

Not every time, but quite often I get stuck on save as well.

Any other ideas as to what could be causing the problem?

I'm on OS 9.2.2 as well.

Thanks for your help!

Get the most recent version of Java: MRJ 2.2.6 for OS 9.2.2 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209 You said you had MRJ2.2.5, maximize your Java version.
By the way, what type of computer (model & cpu, HDD, etc.) do you have & how much ram? Keep i mind Limewire can use copious amounts of ram at times. However in OS 9 u do have control over the max it can use, perhaps it isn't enough!

Danteism September 10th, 2004 12:48 AM

At your suggestion I've downloaded 2.2.6 and in the "about MRJ 2.2.6" file it states:

"It is recommended that you only update to MRJ 2.2.6 if you need to use Oracle 11i client applications over HTTPS and your Oracle software is properly configured to support HTTPS communication with Mac OS 9 clients."

I'm running OS 9.2.2 on a 333 tray loading iMac w/ a 6 gig hard drive and 288 RAM.

I check my RAM usage periodically and I've never seen it come close to maxing out what I've got available. (It's currently sucking 78.5 MB and I've got 77 MB to spare)

As for it's allocation, shockingly it's "suggested size" is 2048k LOL, but it seems to have no problem drawing whatever it needs whenever it needs it. (don't think I've ever seen it running on less than 50MB)

So, still seems to be a mystery. Any further insights?

Thanks for all of your help.

Here are a few suggestions you might try. First thing, a lot of what Apple says you shouldn't do with your mac is said to protect themselves, period. I quit taking their advice 12 years ago. I run 9.2.2 on all of my macs, including a PM 8600/300, PM 9500/120, PM 9600/300, and G3 B&W. I also run MRJ 2.2.6 and don't use oracle. Without getting to techy, boost the memory in the get info dialog box of LW. Another good idea would be to boost your disk cache in the memory control panel to a custom setting. The formula to figure that is 32K times every 1MB of RAM that you have. Don't count VM as actual RAM. You should see a marked improvement. For example, my 8600 had a disk cache default setting of 8160K. I increased it to 14336K based upon my installed RAM.

MonkeyBoy

The uninstallation of an older version of Apple MRJ occurs automatically with the installation of the newer or updated version. Also, you really need to get more RAM and increase your disk cache. 4MB is mighty small for this day and age.

Thanks so much for the tips... I'll try installing MRJ 2.6.6.

Boosting the memory via the LW dialog box didn't improve the situation at all. (at one point just to see, I boosted it by something 60 or 70MB with no noticeable effect)

One more question:

Quote:

The formula to figure that is 32K times every 1MB of RAM that you have.
Do I multiply by the actual RAM installed (in my case 288) or should I deduct the amount being used by my RAM Disk before multiplying. In my memory control panel it currently says that I have 276M of built in RAM available.

So, basically... should I be upping the cache to 9216 or 8832?

Thanks for all of your insights.

Danteism

Multiply the 32k times your actual RAM. Don't even take the current disk cache into consideration. Just for clarity, you have 288MB of RAM (if I understood correctly); take 32K x 288MB = 9216.

Also if speed is a real problem with any application, create a RAM Disk (memory control panel) and run the application from the RAM Disk.

Thanks so much!

I've done exactly what you've suggested, and appreciate the time you've all taken to hlep out.

All the best,
Dante

Everyone with the OS 8-9.x systems:

Prior to installing LW, suggest that you run Disk First Aid, DiskWarrior and/or Norton Utilities to make sure your system is in good condition.

Increase LW preferred memory by 200-300%.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18278 Mac OS: Assigning More Memory to an Application Program.

After you are done with all the downloadings & installations you MUST rebuild your desktops.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10182 Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery.
Or use Techtool Lite which makes rebuilding your desktop easier w/o all the finger twisting on the keyboards.
