What Are Essential System Extensions for LimeWire?

Mac 8600, 280 MHz, Mach Speed G3, OS 9.1, 8160K Disk cache, 512 MB RAM;

I've heard of people keeping specific sets in Extensions Manager to use with certain applications. Does anyone know what basic extensions are needed to run LimeWire? I'm looking for solutions to the frequent freezing and crashing while running LW.

BTW, I've tried all the usual fixes... ERASING LW PREFERENCES, reinstalling, rebuilding desktop, restarting Mac and LimeWire...

Thanks for your time!

LW doesn't use extensions. You could try setting the Extensions setting to minimum/Base set (I can't remember what it's called.) But that may also depend upon what type of connection you have. For example, make sure your internet ext's are loaded: AppleShare, File Sharing Extension, Foreign File Access, Internal V.90 Modem, Internet, MacIPX Ethernet, ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd, URL Access, Web Sharing Extension, XMODEM Tool (These might not all be necessary.) Disable any Fax extensions!!! Make sure you have the most up to date Java for your OS version. MRJ 2.2.5 for OS 8.1-9.2 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75097 OR MRJ 2.2.6 for OS 9.2.2 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209 Also have a look at this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...8221#post98221 Valid points made here! Why not update to 9.2.2!?!! (You know don't you that you can use OSX on your machine.)

Yes I always had a no. of Extension sets to use for various purposes (particularly on my last mac.)

Thank you for that!

Interesting article from Callahan. I've increased my cache to 16,384 K based on 512 MB RAM. Don't know what it'll do yet...
------------------------------------------------------
I installed the latest LimeWire 5.0.8, and it promptly crashed upon startup.

So I made a LW extensions set based on the "Base" set, turning off unnecessary ones. IT WORKED! It downloaded normally, and even stayed on over night allowing uploads without crashing - a huge improvement!

I plan to create extension sets for other apps as well.
------------------------------------------------------
I have MRJ 2.2.5, suitable for OS 9.1. I would love to install OS 9.2.2, but when I tried before, it wouldn't install. Maybe I could do it with a PATCH or something?

Cheers

There's a trick to updating from OS 9.1 to 9.2.2 There's a whole lot of intermediate updates you need to do 1st believe it or not. Ridiculous. Oh hold on I'm getting confused with OS9.0 See this page from apple about the order you must follow: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288
Anyway, great news about your LW. It sounds like there could be an extension conflict there somewhere. I have heard the Fax extensions can cause problems.
