Problems At Startup!! Ok I've had Limewire Basic for about 4 months and when the new version (4.8.1) came out I downloaded it. It has been working fine until I tried to run it again today (I haven't run it for 9 days). I open Limewire and it starts to go through the normal startup procedure until it gets to "Loading User Interface," whereupon it freezes. I've tried waiting for about 15 minutes (and it had made no progress), and also reinstalling Limewire about 3 times. I'm on a Mac G4 and I'd really appreciate a fast response (I'm going on a trip to Pennsylvania the day after tomorrow and I NEED my music)!! |
Try deleting your LW preferences whilst LW is closed & found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire Also try this: Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! It will make LW start up faster. You could try it whilst LW is closed by going to the incomplete folder & arranging it by size & then deleting those at 0 KB. |
Alright thanks I'll try this tomorrow and get back to you. Time to get some sleep!! |
Ok I tried deleting my preferences and LW itself, but when I tried to reinstall it and run it again it got all the way to loading status window and then froze. I've been waiting about 1 minute and nothing new has happened. BTW theres nothing in my incomplete folder. |
There's nothing in your incomplete folder b/c you've chosen a different location to save your files. Search your computer for the older location you saved your files & your older incomplete folder are. They will both be at the same directory level. eg: /Users/your_username ... if that was where your older save folder was then that's where your older incomplete folder will be. So reset the save location to where it was before. I don't know which version of Mac OSX you have but might I suggest you reinstall Java using the standalone Java installer. See Fixes for LW (click on link) You haven't given us any clue as to which OSX version you're using. |
O yea sorry I'm on OS X (10.3.9). |
I'll try to find the old save folder now (along with the incomplete one). |
O crap I just remembered this: When I first got LW it was an older version that I had to use Classic to run (Mac OS 9). So after I got that earlier version it I set my download destination to a different file. So when the new update (4.8.1) came out and I downloaded it, I replaced the old LW with the new one. The preferences were already set on the new version (possibly because I hadn't deleted the preferences folder in my library that you told me about earlier), so I didn't have to change anything. As it turns out the old DL destination file was in the folder for the earlier version of LW (and I seem to remember my incomplete folder being there as well) and this folder I deleted. Because the preferences were already set for the new version (which as I said has been working fine for months) IDK where the old DL destination would be other than in the old versions folder!! |
1 other thing: I have 512 Megs of total RAM so I doubt that's a problem. Unless I don't have enough RAM allotted to LW in which case I would need to know how to transfer more (I used to know on my old machine but never looked into it on my new 1). |
On mac osx it's not an issue so much. afaik osx allocates as much ram as required at the time. But also remember that all osx programs use virtual memory so you need to have lots of sufficient HDD space. There's ways of reducing ram usage but not until you get LW to open. Also see this:http://www.limewire.com/english/content/support.shtml re: osx issues So how much ram & spare HDD space do you have? |
As I said I have 512 Megs of RAM (unless were talking about 2 different kinds of RAM or something), and if you mean space left on my Hard Drive the answer would be: The total cpacity is 38.16 GB, and the space not being used is 17.07 GB. But I doubt this is the problem either; because I just cleared about 4 GB of space and even before I did that LW was working perfectly. |
Ok I'm headed to Pennsylvaina in 2 hours (I'll be there until Sunday) so if you have any ideas or questions just post them and I'll get back to you with answers when I get back. BTW I really appreciate your help. |
Ok I got back last night, and I'm ready to get back to business. So I'll talk to you very soon hopefully!! |
I'm a little confused. You were using classic LW in classic environment but now you're using LW 4.8.1 in osx. If so I'd have thought they would have separate preferences. |
They didn't have seperate Prefs. |
At least as far as I remember, but they may just have had the same saving and sharing prefs and I had to modify the other things and I just forgot about that (I doubt that but it's still a possibility). But supposing I had to modify everything again where would I find the old LW Save and Incomplete files (especially if I deleted the old LW folder which is where they were)? |
I also downloaded a new screen saver (which I've never done before, I've just used the built in ones) right around the time that LW stopped working (problem is I can't remember if i DLd it before or after). Could that have something to do with it? |
The simple way to find the other downld folder is to do a search of your comp for incomplete. The incomplete folder will be in the same directory level as the downld folder. I've never run LW is classic envt., but have run it on os9 on same comp. In that case of course the prefs are stored in the os9 prefs folder. Your osx LW preferences could be an issue. Try deleting or removing them; found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire Once LW is open, perhaps you should change the save location if it saves in the same location as the classic LW did. Otherwise it might be using the same downld preferences in which case ... I don't know if it makes a difference or not but it might. Screensavers have been known to have issues. you could try to disable it at least temporarily to see if it makes a difference. |
Ok I've done that search for Incomplete and the classic one did come up but theres nothing in it. I did another search for the old LW prefs but still came up with nothing. I've tried deleting the OSX prefs as well and again nothing. As for the Screen Saver I disabled it and nothing changed. I have an idea though: What if I were to delete all traces of LW that I can find, would that make a difference? |
