Help, No CONNECT!!!

PLEASE HELP ME, I GO TO LIMEWIRE, BUT IT WON'T CONNECT, ISN'T SUPPOSED TO CONNECT WHEN I OPEN IT? PLEASE I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING, BYT THE WAY, MY CONNECTION IS BY LAN, I GO TO COLLEGE SO I AM ALWAYS ON-LINE, SO I DON'T DIAL UP, DOES THIS AFFECT MY LIMEWIRE?

afisk September 20th, 2001 03:37 PM

When you press the connect button, what do you see in the "Connections" tab? Do you see anything happen at all? Can you connect some of the time but not others, or can you never connect?

Unregistered September 21st, 2001 05:03 PM

I'm having a similar problem with connections.
My connection is cable, so I'm also always connected.
I hit "connect", and in the connections window I see
the number "connecting", but after about 30 seconds
it disappears and I'm still not connected.

afisk September 22nd, 2001 09:09 AM

Does this occur every time, even if you restart LimeWire? Also, are you able to open up other Internet applications, such as IE or Netscape, when you are getting this message?

Also, just to make sure, this is on a Mac right?

i too can't get limewire to connect. I have MacOS 9.2.1, but had no problems installing. My problems is that i click connect and after about 30 seconds of trying to connec to router.limewire.com, it gives up. I can't connect to any other connection either. What gives?

afisk October 2nd, 2001 06:56 AM

Hmmn...well, we're not sure exactly what the problem is, but we're going to give this part of the program a good looking at,l so you should see improvements in future versions.

When?

Hi
Ok so we've seen that all have the same problem and thats including me, I'm using a G4 OS 9.1 with a cable connection. But when will there be a fix? I've seen hundreds upon hundreds of posts in the other sections with the same problem, all it needs is a fix for the connect which shouldnt take to long, instead of haveing a totaly new version just make a couple of bug fixes like Apple does with OS and then it will just be Limewire 1.8 instead of 2.0!!

Akerney October 2nd, 2001 10:12 PM

try...

...going to your connections tab and go down below the connected host box in in the little user input box above where you have how many connections that you want to keep up type in one of the auto connect servers but then instead of port 6346 try 6347 it worked earlier. You might have to try most of the servers because it would not work for me untill i tried connect3.gnutellanet.com

not quite bulletproof

I had posted that the latest Mac beta (OS 8.6) was "bulletproof"...until I also began having trouble with no connection upon app startup.

Whereas I rarely had to restart the application to get a connection before the latest beta, now I have to do it once or twice each time.

Unregistered October 3rd, 2001 05:55 PM

I'm also unable to connect with 1.7. Using Mac OS 8.6,no firewall,DSL connection. It tries each host for a few seconds & just quits each time.I did connect 2 days ago,but today no luck on about 2 dozen tries.

What? Wait for another Version?!

Are you serious? After downloading 1.7, installing it, reading about a zillion FAQs, now you say that we macheads have to wait for another version in order to use Limewire again? But, but, 1.6 was working ok for soooooo long, then nothing. Now, really nothing! Please please don't wait until another update, we need music now. Desperately.

Unregistered October 5th, 2001 08:21 AM

For the sake of further information: I'm using a dial-up connection, not cable or DSL, but I'm having exactly the same problem (except that I wait a good long time, like fifteen minutes, before I despair of ever making a connection).

In an attempt at diagnosing the problem, last night I downloaded and ran Mactella (which, let me tell you, is no substitute for Limewire -- or wouldn't be if one could connect with Limewire). But Mactella instantly made a huge number of rock-solid connections: they were there within minutes, and they stayed there over hours of off-and-on observation. And yes, it was possible to download from the hosts; they weren't phantoms.

I'm using OS 9.04 on a G3 Firewire; I've got NetBarrier installed but turning it off doesn't seem to affect the connection problem (and having it on never had any effect on previous versions of Limewire).

Like others here, I hope you all can get this fixed without our all having to wait for another major update. It's wonderful software, when it works.

MacTroubles!!!

I can't log in either. Changing the port to 6347 hasn't gotten me anywhere either. Any further suggestions? Limewire really is/was the pinnacle of Mac file-sharers.

Man, i hear you guys, but my problem is even worse. In the FAQ it says if Limewire freezes it should only happen 1 every hundred times. well on my mac, which is a 733 G4 with 128 megs of Ram, it only runs correctly 1 out of every hundred times, and i have version 1.7. What the heck is going on?
Some times the program will show up and the window freezes. Sometimes the window is just a gray box. Sometimes the buttons look all funky. HELP ME PLEASE.

TruStarwarrior October 6th, 2001 07:46 PM

Look under the options on your menu bar and try to find an option than disables a special extension for LimeWire (under the help menu, I think). This might stop your freezing. I'm sorry this is so vague. I don't have a Mac to test this out on, but I do recall someone solving the freezing problem by disabling an extension, which can be done with an extension manager or by using the option in the menu (version 1.7 and up). Does this help at all?

As for the connection thing, I'm not sure what's up. The problem seemed to be fixed a couple of days ago (problem with LimeWire's bootstrap server), but the Mac version may still need some help. If you do want to revert to version 1.6, go to:

or

This connetion problem has been around for a long time. I'm running an iMac 500 with 192 Meg of Ram and have had these connection problems with versions 1.6 b and d. Intial connection would be made but the longer i'm on line the less host i have before eventually i just can't connect anynore without a certain ammount of fiddiling with the connecions tab.
I hoped this problem would be fixed with 1.7 but it looks like i'm still stuck with Aimster!

badger October 7th, 2001 08:24 AM

Try This

I'm connecting nearly everytime now with 1.7 beta No VM (the 3.6 Mb download that assumes you have MRJ 2.2.5). I'm using OS 8.6 on several Macs.

1. Start fresh by deleting everything in your Incomplete folder.

2. Startup with minimal extensions necessary to access internet (at least temporarily to troubleshoot LimeWire). Also, for testing puposes, run no other programs.

3. Patiently wait for LimeWire to make connections. I noticed in the the latest LimeWire beta that it is can be very slow to start connections, but once connections start to click in, they increase exponentially.

4. The "funny radio button" type behavior comes and goes, typically the longer I'm connected. I've noticed the longer I wait to click the mouse or make any actions within the program, the less funny business happens. That is, resist rapid commands, clicks, and movement.

This LimeWire crew is very hot with java, but java implementation is very persnicity on the Mac. I'm surprised at how well LimeWire works on so many platforms.

Seems ok now

After 4 days of being unable to connect it suddenly decided to work normally today. Hope it stays up.

Unregistered October 8th, 2001 07:05 PM

i too had this but it worked ok when

i restarted LimeWire 1.7. Being that I have a modem, the connection failes about twice a day, thats when i restart LimeWire. Just quit the app, i try to let others finish their downloads first. Then restart it. no sweat.

Unregistered October 8th, 2001 07:09 PM

Also

When I have had problems with other programs, i have found that doing an install with all extensions and control panels OFF has solved the problems. I also agree that removing the files from incomplete helps for some reason. I use a G4 400 OS9.0.4 448Mb RAM: 100 allocated to LimeWire.
