downloads stay as limewire files, cant install applications

just started using a mac and all the programs I download stay as limewire files. With a pc I double clicked the file after downloading and it launched the setup to install the program. someone suggested changing the filename but this didn't work, it still tries to load all files into limewire. saying all this, I'm new to macs and I'm presuming that a .sit file (the type i'm downloading) is an installation file for the mac. am I doing something stoopid? please help as I'm lacking loads of software. thanks!

I am having somewhat of the same problem. i.e.... I have downloaded some "mp3" files. However, once I have downloaded them, they stay as limewire documents, and I can't use them in ANY of my programs. NOR can I convert them. Some of the files I download, I am able to add the extension ".mp3", and it automatically turns into a Quicktime file... which is perfect. However, this is very frustrating because MOST of the files I download I can't use, and it has been time wasted waiting for them.... what can we do?

Someone please help :-)

LimeWire 1.7 has been updated so that this will no longer happen. What version are you using? If you're using 1.7, be sure to let us know. If it's still got problems, we need to pay some more attention to it.

Using v1.7

Yeah, I'm using V 1.7. Someone said that I should revert to 1.4 to stop this happening but I cant find it anywhere on the net. would be cool if you could look into this.

thanks

If you are using 1.7 and are still experiencing LimeWire doc conflicts, please post and let me know specifically. For anyone wanting an older version of LW, try this link:

problem solved

I launched stuffit expander and loaded the file into it instead of double clicking the file from my hard drive. it unpacked the installation file. dunno why I cant double click downloaded files but it's sorted anyway. thanks for the advice:D

Ahhh!

I am also having problems with the downloaded mp3 files staying documents. I have tried putting them in stuffit, I have downloaded an encoder, nothing is working!

I am having the same problem, all down loaded files display a generic Limewire icon. Stuffit didn't work. Running 1.7 on 233 iMac OS 9.04

I am using 1.7 as well. Things seems to be working better today though... this problem has only happened once! Thanks :-)
