Default Launches different players

Further to my last post, I've now discovered different downloads launch in different players!!

Two tracks I downloaded today launched in iTunes, my preferred player, tracks I downloaded yesterday launch in QT Player.

Why is this and how can I make them all launch in iTunes?

Thanks for responding. I tried what you suggested but to no avail. The only options I got when control/clicking on the file were, Launch, Delete and Annotate.

I tried other combinations of control/alt etc but got the same things.

Any other ideas??

OS 9 is a little different. You need to go to the Control panel -> PC Exchange & select the program for that file format (select the file format & change the program which opens it), or/& select iTunes & select the format's you want to open it with. I took these snaps on Jan 7 so I'm also a bit rusty. lol Have advanced options open & change mapping to particular file.

It's my guess one format is mp3 & the other m4a or mp3Pro. iTunes can't open mp3Pro. No big deal because mp3Pro was designed for the very low bit-rates such as under 128 kbps & its biggest efficiency compared to other formats is around 64 kbps. Nowadays who really want their music at such low bitrates.

Don't forget also, there's another player option for OS 9. Audion (click on link) which is now free. Get it whilst you can!!! It plays everything that iTunes can't including Ogg Vorbis, mp3Pro & more. Anything iTunes can't play Audion can (except wma & rp.)

Oh I just remembered ... or should I say I forgot to mention earlier, there "was" a 3rd party program (no longer made & another program now has that name) called iTuner. I sat it on my desktop. All you do is drag & drop an audio file onto its icon & the file's attributes change to that of iTunes (including its icon.) It's an iTunes file associator. I found it very handy. Since it's no longer available. I can send it to anybody who wants it. It was freeware btw. I have iTuner version 2.6

Oh & I also forgot in OS 9 your mp3's may downld with their own original mp3 icon/attributes. However, if your control panel is properly set up then it shouldn't be an issue.

LOTR that sounded so impressive I thought it was going to work but sadly....

I did everything. All the files on the Limewire library are indiacted as MP3.

Now in the file exchange all mp2 exts. are next to iTunes application, with 'Play' as the file type. All mp3 extensions are the same except some have MPG3 as the file type.

Is this correct?

Does it work & do they play? Sorry I haven't played around with OS 9's file attibutes for some time. If it works then stick with it, however, if you have problems with it then give details. I'm not sure what iTunes abilities with mp2 are. That's a much older format. In OS9 it may indicate some files as being mp2 when perhaps they're not really true mp2. It's hard to say. Do you have Mac Army Knife by any chance? What OS 9 may indicate as being mp2 may in fact simply be another format OS 9 doesn't recognise such as mp3pro or ogg vorbis or m4a. I'd need to reboot into OS 9 to see what it's response to these files are. After all, some of these formats were relatively new when OSX came around so OS 9 wasn't fully catered for recognising them properly. (To reboot into OS 9 you'd need to give me 24-48 hrs 'cos I'm doing other things that take time in OSX at present. Various processing!)

Hi LOTR

The changes in file assigments made no difference. The tracks that launched and played in QT still do, the tracks that launced and play in iTunes still do.

All the tracks are mp3 according to the Limewire library.

I don't have Mac Army Knife.

Hmm perhaps after the next time you launch LW or reboot the computer it might make a difference. Next time I reboot, I'll do it into OS 9 to see if I can check it out.

Hi LOTR

Well interestingly, all the downloads I've done since the original ones, have been launching the iTiunes player. So I guess the problem's fixed by the file exchange thing.

The original ones do still launch the QT player though, weird!! Whatever.
