Limewire cuts off my inter net connection!

Hi,

I have an Apple Mac, G5, running OS X 10.3.9. I am using a speedtouch 330, usb adsl modem. My ISP is Bulldog. I have seen on a lot of forums that this version of OSx has a lot of problems. I have read and tried everything but nothing so far has worked.

The problem i have is that Limewire only runs for around 10 minuites and then all downloads stop, my internet connection disconnects but does not actually complete the disconnection- but i still cannot connect to the internet. I have to restart my computer. I have noticed that at this point, if i close and re-open Limewire, in the Limewire status window a firewall is detected - but my firewall is off and the limewie port already allowed.

I have downloaded all java updates, turned off my firwall, allowed the limewire port on the firewall. Tried using the UPnP option but the same thing happens. Even tried uninstalling my modem, but didnt work. Heard about port forwarding, but this doesnt work for me again, tried a few times.

Called Bulldog but they refused to help as my internet connection is fine if limewire is not running. Emailed Limewire twice with no reply.

Feel like smashing up my mac but it cost too much to buy the bloody thing.

Can anyone give me any advice on what i can try to fix the
problem?

Thanx a lot.

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. How much ram?
2. Hard Disk space available?
3. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
4. What version of Limewire (LW) do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW.
5. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
6. Do you use the Resume/Find Sources function on all your files after you start LW?
7. Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False?

8. How long has this problem been happening? How long have you been using LW? And has the present problem only started with the present version or earlier?

9. Have you checked to see if your model needs any firmware updates: http://www.speedtouch.com/support.htm

10. Are you using the modem through your USB2 port? Or your USB1 port? USB1 (such as your keyboard uses) will be too slow & unreliable.
Ethernet modems are much faster & reliable than USB.

Hi,

Thanx for your speedy reply.

1) RAM-1GB
2) HARD DISK SPACE AVAILABLE- 88.84GB
3) Trying to connect from home
4) VERSION OF LIMEWIRE - 4.10.5 Pro, Java 1.4.2_09
5) Connection is not shared
6) Do not use resume/ Find sources function on all files after i start Limewire. Sometimes i do, but if so, only on one or two files that need more sources.
7) TEST RESULT - True
8) This problem has been happening since i began using Limewire, so for around a month and a half. Had the problem with this version and the earlier version.
9) Downloaded the update that you gave, restarted the computer and started limewire-same problem. Tried twice and still happens.
10) I am using my modem through the USB2 port (back of my mac)

Thanx again.

To see if we can work out if the problem is what I suspect it is, try something for me. Go to Utilities folder, open up Activity Monitor. Keep a pen & paper handy. Then open up LW, make a note of how much RAM, CPU & especially VM (virtual memory) that LW uses. Make recordings every 5-10 mins. Do a search & see if the VM amount increases notably directly after this. And keep making recordings up until you lose connection.

BTW does LW crash at all? If yes, post segments of the crash report. (You'll find crash reports under -> OSX HDD >Username>Library>Logs>Crash reports)

(BTW see my pm (personal message in your user cp)

I can apparently no longer pm you or reply to your pm's. Perhaps you changed your options.

What I was going to say was, for LW bouncing in the dock syndrome, reinstalling this is usually the answer http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html
If you did it once, then perhaps you need to do it again. I'm sure you still have the installer if you did it once before.

Ive just reduce the number of downloads to 2, to keep the virtual memory down, and it seems to be working. LImewire has now been running for an hour!
Looks like you were right.
Hopefully it will stay working..
Thanx a million for all your help!
