LW hangs up when users try to connect

Hello to everyone on this forum from a new desperate member.

I need some help to get my son back into Limewire because I am tired of his using my LW to download his songs.

I am the admin on a single, simple eMac G4 computer with 3 users, running OSX.3.9., 256Mb RAM and only about 5G of harddrive left due to music files.

I have not experienced any problems on Limewire 4.10.9, but my favorite user, my son, started experiencing a hangup when trying to load Limewire. It would stop at various points in the loading sequence. I upgraded to 4.12.6 and while he still has the same problems, I do not have any problem getting into the new LW and downloading, searching, etc.

Prior to this post I tried the fixes referenced in the sticky notes, but to no avail. Maybe this is a problem with my Mac system setup options and not Limewire, but I am looking for any help.

Also, this problem seemed to affect all 3 users, since I am the only one able to use LW.

What I have checked so far: 6346 Port on and gnutella traffic getting thru. Test successful. Java 1.4.2_09 has no segmentation fault. Tossed LW prefs. and removed com.apple.quicktime plugin preferences.plist. Reloaded LW from Safari. Did Safe boot and repaired disk permissions. Quicktime is already up to 7.1.3. so I guess the LW conflict was fixed probably at least a year ago...which reminds me, most of the sticky fixes are also somewhat old, like me.;)

Anyway, suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks

Try setting each user's LW to use a different port. If that's possible. If port forwarding is required for each account then so be it. If a program has been using a particular port, & then another program later or at same time tries to use the same port then it may cause issues. Depending on the setup of course.

Also consider this for your son's accounts: Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue!, as this will definitely freshen up LW & speed up startup times. Having too many incompletes & over 2,000 shares definitely takes its toll in OSX.

Hi!, and thanks for the reply.

With regard to download queue, I had already checked on my hard drive and found only about 50 or so incomplete dl's between all users. Since I am the only one on my computer that is able to load LW, I went ahead and deleted these files in LW anyway.

The idea of a conflict with two applications trying to use the same port is worth checking, but the test was successful on getting traffic thru on 6346 for my son when I did it. Currently I am manually configured to port 6346.

I am running down the idea of a system setting or missing permission that prevents LW from loading for any users (except me). Of course, I can't get into anyones LW to check for problems. I do know my users can connect to the internet and as far as I know other applications do not seem to be giving any problems.

I am also investigating cache clearing programs, as I have read that this can sometimes be problematic, but I am otherwise running out of ideas.

Any suggestions you may offer from this point will be checked out.

Thanks!
