Lord of the Rings has a distinguished reputation

mpeg streamclip is good

But I use it for some editing purposes rather than a regular player.

Like MPlayer, mpeg streamclip can also open DVD VOB files.

(AVI support was added in later versions of mpeg Streamclip.)
