Airport, IP Addresses, and Limewire
 

I'm having trouble uploading with Limewire and my Mac, which is connected to an Airport network. Apparantly the problem is that the Airport base station acts as a firewall. I'm trying to use the Advanced setting to push my IP addresss, but Apple tech support is somewhat baffled on WHICH IP Address Limewire is looking for -- the Apple Airport base station IP, the one in my TCP/IP control panel. Any experts out there have any ideas? Just trying to share more of my files!

Try pushing the IP that is a public address and not a private address.

Private addresses: 10.*, 172.16.* - 172.31.*, 192.168.*

My guess is the base station has a public address such as 24.24.100.100 and the address in your TCP control panel is a private one. If both addresses are public, force your TCP control panel IP.


I'm partially contradicting what Adam's saying here but I don't see the point of forcing a private IP since an outside host wouldn't know what host to connect to.

Forcing one IP and later trying the other to see if it's better might be the best course. You can tell if your firewall is harming uploads if you get a lot of "Couldn't Connect" in your upload window. This essentially means the push request necessary for a firewalled host (in this case, you) failed.

The saga continues!

I've tried using a couple different IP addresses in the Limewire advanced preferences box -- my cable modem company's IP address, the IP from my Apple wireless Airport box...

I spoke to Apple tech support about this, and they bumped me up to the higher level tech people The guy said, "This invovled port mapping, and I can tell you how to do it for $199." I thought he was joking, so I said, "Sure! Go ahead! Put it on my tab!" but then he asked me for my credit card number -- he WASN'T joking! I declined, downloaded the manual, and I've tried to play with it a bit, but no luck so far.

FWIW, I discounnected the whole wireless network and plugged my cable modem directly in to my computer, and entered the cable modem's IP address in the Push field. Still not conclusive -- more uploads going through, but still plenty of "Couldn't Connect".

That is odd. Even when you directly connected the modem it still was a problem. There might be a firewall somewhere along the path that is causing the errors. It's possible that you can't accept incoming connections. You can check by looking in the Connections panel of LimeWire. Since ultrapeers are prevalent now it might take a long while to see an incoming connection (as opposed to outgoing) but if you have ever seen one then a firewall is not preventing incoming connections.
