Avi and MP4 files won't open - say's it's not a video file. Any tips please.

Hi, Having just downloaded a 700mb .avi file (or that is what it was listed as) using Limewire basic 4.14.02 and tried to open but got the message "this is not a video file". I am running an Intel Mac OSX Tiger with Quicktime and DivX player but neither will open it. This is not the first time this has happened. Is it anything to do with my Mac? Also tried to open a preview of a MP4 file and got the same message where both are listed as video files. Very frustrating!! :bangh:

did you ever find an answer to this? I have the same problem.

right click on search results and choose bitzi lookup to verify the veracity of said file...there are many fakes floating around

I have come across files with changed extensions. Perhaps it's not really a mp4 & perhaps it's even an audio file. mp4 is often used to designate mp4 audio files, depending on the program used to convert it. Such programs include WinAmp who do their own version of mp4 audio, not absolutely identical to apples m4a format but almost.

For video files also get these players VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) & also MPlayer - The Movie Player Both can do the odd thing the other can't, but both are better than DivX Player.

I am having this same problem! I am so close to canceling this whole thing. I have tried VLC and other players. I have literally gotten this with four different files! This is a new Mac too.

okay, just tried a new video and was able to preview. Checked your reply.

So you are saying that this might be common with files being mislabeled?
