Options Screen Too Small, Can't Set Options!

I just dowloaded 2.2 for Mac, and the Options screen cuts off about halfway through. The window can't be resized, either.

The upshot of all this is that you can't change most of the options, which renders LimeWire virtually unusable; you can't add servers, your bandwidth is permanently stuck at 0%, you can't change the max number of searches, you can't change the number of simultaneous downloads, etc. This is a real pain.

Anyone know how to fix this?

ludickid March 1st, 2002 07:00 PM

By the way, this problem also exists with the new Beta version of LimeWire for Mac, so no help there.

amkaplan March 18th, 2002 09:06 PM

The only way to fix this is to have an upgrade. I've emailed about this bug twice and nothing's been done. Just when I start to really like Limewire they screw it up and don't listen to feedback for a while and then screw it up some other way when they fix the first problem...

Unregistered March 22nd, 2002 09:21 PM

same same problem ... last build didn't have this problem, and they encourage me to buy the pro version ... get the free version working and i'll buy pro ... as of now, i am dissatisfied.

Unregistered March 22nd, 2002 11:40 PM

Bought the Pro version - this problem still there.

Option screen cut off

Same here, I wrote twice about this in free limewire. Just paid for and downloaded New 2.3.1 LimeWire Pro and it still has problem.

Unregistered March 25th, 2002 05:26 PM

I wish I had read this before I purchased the pro version! I'm having the same problem. Any word on if/when it might be fixed??? How frustrating!!!

Unregistered March 25th, 2002 07:19 PM

Same problem here.
Apparently, Limewire is content with taking consumers' money and not bothering to spend about five minutes to fix bugs.
To heel with them, I say.
Limewire, you've lost a customer.

afisk March 27th, 2002 04:29 PM

This bug slipped through because we are not able to reproduce it on our machines. I did, however, make a slight change in 2.3.1 that I hope has fixed the problem.

Do you guys still get this problem with LimeWire 2.3.1? Thanks, and our apologies for the frustration.

Updates for Pro

So, how do we force an update for Pro? I just downloaded it last week. I don't even know if I can get to the screen for updates in options. Is it possible to get a patch so that the problem can be repaired?

Unregistered March 28th, 2002 08:39 AM

Still Not Working

Have downloaded the new version and the problem still exists. This is my first posting...am not one of the posters above.
In the Options window, the window is cut off on the right side.
Say under the Uploads/Slots window...the window is cut off just to the right of the colons so the inputs are not seen therefore I do not have access to them. The same for every other options window. Looks about 2 inches are cutoff causing zero customization abilities.
I am running 9.1 on a G3 desktop.

LW 2.3.1 seems to have the same problem as 2.2.4?
As LW developers can't seem to duplicate this error could it be certain Mac OS, CPU speed,
available memory or heaven forbid an "extension" conflict?

I have NO problems with LW1.7 and use it (lately) for almost all of my downloads.

Options Windows are OK with LW 2.1.3 Pro....
my problem with LW 2.1.3 Pro is that the "connect" tab has NEVER worked to reconnect
after I've been disconnected.

I'm using OS 9.1 on a (old) 6360 Performa; 160MHz PowerPC 603e Processor; 80Mg ram;

I have LW 1.7; LW 2.1.3 Pro and LW 2.2.4 Pro installed

Perhaps, we ALL should give the LW developers more info on the systems being used
that have this Options Window problem with LimeWire.

cwhaley March 28th, 2002 09:21 AM

For what it's worth, I've identified the problem and have a workaround. I'll leave it to the developers to fix it properly.

Basically, the format for most of the text in the Options box is taken from the Large System Font setting we each have made in the Appearance control panel. I'm assuming that most of us are using the original standard (Chicago) or one of the sexier new ones like Textile (my choice).

All but one of the choices available produces the overrun problem.

Set your Large System Font to Techno, and everything fits, because it's the skinniest of the choices available. It's also the least attractive from my point of view, but clearly the font of choice for the Mac LimeWire developers.

If the boxes were redone to accomodate the widest of the Large System Fonts (instead of the narrowest), then everything should be cool again.

afisk March 28th, 2002 10:32 AM

Do you guys see any less cliping with 2.3.1 than you did with the earlier version?

I made another slight change for 2.3.2 that hopefully will solve it, but, again, I can't be sure given that we still have not been able to reproduce it.

Rhohl March 28th, 2002 03:13 PM

Fix the Options for now

Techno works for me!
LW 2.2.4 "Options Windows" are now useable!

Thank you Charles

Although, Techno is NOT my most favorite font.

Unregistered March 29th, 2002 06:43 PM

Techno no workie

I tried the tecnhno workaround for the screwed options windows. It didn't help at all.

Honestly, I was on the verge of buying pro, when I decided to go and upgrade the freebie version--cursed pop-ups. And Limewire has been annoying ever since. Maybe they should make earlier versions available. Heck, I'd love to DOWNGRADE to a workeable version, even buy it.

efield March 29th, 2002 07:49 PM

A download listing of older versions are linked from the FAQ:
<http://www3.limewire.com/download/>

cwhaley March 30th, 2002 10:52 AM

Techno should work

I'm surprised to hear that changing the Large System Font to Techno didn't work for one person, while others have had the same success as I have had.

It's obviously critical that you close Limewire before or just after changing the font, or the change won't take effect until you do close and reopen it. If the Techno font isn't appearing as the primary font within Limewire's Options box, you've obviously screwed up somewhere along the way.

Rhohl March 30th, 2002 11:57 AM

Now that the Techno font (work around) is working for me
to fix the LW Pro "Option Window" problem,

I'm wondering if there are Mac system/users with the newer LW versions
that do NOT have the LW "Option Window" problem?

If so, which versions are you using on which Mac OS?

Or is this a problem for ALL Macs using these versions????????????

Bucklazy March 30th, 2002 03:24 PM

Techno ?!

Guess I will switch to Techno. Now the fellow who figured that out must not be working 90 hours a week. Kudos for your good trouble shooting though. I installed this latest version hoping the bug would be gone. Then came here for help. It seems like this must be a Mac OS 9.x thing. I got it to work fine on win xp today at my moms house.

G4 733 mhz Mac OS 9.2

cwhaley March 30th, 2002 04:45 PM

Techno for now, but not forever

Hey guys....

I'm no developer, but, yes, I had enough time to think this thing through to come up with my workaround (not a solution).

Since no developer can second guess what fonts a user may have installed (and the ensuing spacing that goes along with the fonts), the safest bet is to go with a system font, since everyone has it.

Originally, Chiago was the only Large System Font for Macintosh. Now, there's a choice of about six. That may have come with System 9.x but I won't swear to that.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that once you switch to Techno, set your favourite Options settings in LW, you can still switch back to whatever Large System Font you like (until you want to change Options again).

I certainly wouldn't use anything as ugly as Techno for day-to-day work.

Then again, I guess it's a personal preference thing.

As I mentioned earlier, if the developers can scale the Options box size up to accomodate the widest Large System Font, everyone should be happy.

2.3.1 doesn't fix it!

I'm running 9.2.2 on a 450 G4 and I'm here to tell you that Limewire 2.3.1 does NOT fix the unresizable window problem everyone is having. I can't believe you can't duplicate this problem! Find a different Mac to download your own software onto and try THAT!

Works

Techno font works for me... Mac Os 9.1
Others do not. Very good.
Now if only I can figure out why I must manually change the
"keep approximately _ connections up" to 6 everytime I start up.
The program remembers to put a 6 in that slot...but only connects to 3.
I must retype in 6 after startup.
I guess I should type this as a new thread.

Hey folks -- give 2.3.3 a shot. I changes one last thing so that it's now exactly like the older versions, so hopefully it will be fixed. Let me know if this solves it.

If you have Pro, you can download 2.3.3 from your pro download link. Otherwise, you need to go to our web site.

Sorry again for the frustrations.

Option prob solved by LW 2.3.3 ???????

First, I turned off the Techno
Second, I went to my PRO download page
Third, I found only " LW 2.3.2" available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Forth, I turned Techno back on so I can use my LW 2.2.4 version
Fifth, I wrote myself a note to check the download site again, tomorrow

I guess that I'm too fast for you, afisk.

I'm running 2.3.3-- I downloaded it yesterday. I still have the same problem, I'm afraid, though I haven't tried the Techno solution.

The pro version actually is 2.3.3, even though it says 2.3.2. Sorry to hear it didn't work for at least one person. I'll keep trying to reproduce it here.

cwhaley April 3rd, 2002 07:31 AM

Read my lips

Dear developer...

Are you reading anything in this thread?

I think I explained very carefully what's wrong with your Mac implementation. You certainly haven't fixed anything with 2.3.3

Just make the damned Options box wider!

Meanwhile I guess we're stuck using Techno as the Large System Font to use the Options box.

Yes, the bug still exists, I just downloaded 2.3.1 Basic and the window is cut. I am using OS 9.2.2 on an imac.

when do you guys solve the problem?

Rhohl April 7th, 2002 11:59 AM

LWPro 2.3.3 the same (options window prob)

OK, today I did it...
downloaded and installed LWPro 2.3.3
(didn't give up mt good old LW 1.7 though)

I can confirm that the "options widow" problem is still there;
NO CHANGE SEEN from LW 2.2.4 Pro; boxes do not appear any wider in 2.3.3

Also, something NEW has been added; a new PROBLEM (for me):
After using LW 2.3.3 for about 2hrs and 3 audio downloads (which completed OK),;

Lost the "X" boxes in the searching tabs...Also the number of "Hits"...
and any display of Search results (BLANK SEARCH WINDOW).

"statistics" was OK (working);
showed (3) Ultrapeer hosts with (215) hosts; 31,000+ files, 150,000 MGs and the stats were in action

Yet, NO "results" for:
D*re Str*its/Elt*n J*hn/Br*ce Spr*ngstein/L*d Z*pplin/B**tles/etc.etc.etc.
and these (artist only) searches generally return 'TOO" many(is it possible) hits.

Did my LW Pro 2.3.3 get tired?
Still had more memory available.
Using a Mac Performa 6360 OS 9.1 *)Mgs RAM; AOL dial-up (AOL was OK at the time)

Anyone else?

This "options window" problem hasn't disappeared,
LW 2.3.3 Pro has it and only(?) the Techno font still works for me as a workaround.

Do any Mac OS systems NOT have the problem with LW 2.3.3Pro ?

afisk April 15th, 2002 09:06 AM

Hello Everyone-

I was finally able to reproduce the problem on my machine -- sorrry it took us so long. I also identified the culprit that made everything break in the code, and I should have it fixed with the next release.

Just to quickly note -- it's unfortunately not quite as simple as just making the options screen bigger, as there are fonts of many different sizes that would still not work with the larger options screen. So, it really does have to be sized dynamically according to the font size.

Thanks, and sorry again for the frunstration with this.

amkaplan April 27th, 2002 10:00 AM

FIXED!

After bitching about it here, I had the brilliant idea (finally) of changing the system font. I usually use Sand for my system font and the window would be cut off. If you use Charcoal, you can set your options and then revert to your favorite font.

My only disappointment is that a couple of others beat me to the solution!

Allan

afisk April 29th, 2002 08:48 AM

Everyone will be happy to know that this is fixed in LimeWire 2.4.0, which should be released by the end of this week. Apologies to everyone again for the inconvenience.

Best,

Lake May 8th, 2002 11:16 AM

I can confirm that this has been solved in 2.4.1 (downloaded yesterday). Again useful wide options screen. Thank you.

Good work overall. I have not had any problem (aside from the options screen) in several months of use, on a PBG3/400 running 9.0.4 and 9.1.

Best,
Lake

afisk May 8th, 2002 04:34 PM

Glad to hear it's working for you now. My sincere apologies to everyone that it took so darn long to fix!

Unregistered May 10th, 2002 07:55 PM

fonts

I tried changing the font to techno and it only changed the font on the top of the window, nothing inside the window. Any other suggestions?

bb

afisk May 14th, 2002 07:33 AM

With LimeWire 2.4.x and above, you should be able to use any font as your system font, and the screen will size accordingly.
