Have You Tryed WinMX? Whats Better Here?

Hi all. I have been useing WinMx for some time now and I have never had a problem as of yet! I came here just to look around to see if there were any other places like WinMx on the net and found this one. From what I have been reading here, I see some unhappy campers having problems with the software! I see they have freeware for it, so why buy the Pro? WinMX only has one software and it's free and very simple to use. And no it dosn't have any spyware in it, do they have any here? Are firewalls a problem here? I use Windows XP's firewall and one by OnTrack at the same time. I keep over 3,000 Mp3 share files up most of the time, is that a problem here? At this point in time I havn't loaded any software for this site. If any of you have used WinMX, can you tell me whats so great about this place over WinMX? (No I don't work for WinMX or have anything to do with it!) I guess what I am asking is this: Whats better on the Gnutella vs WinMX? There both world wide. Sorry if this seems like I am being some kind of a jurk about this, Iam not. I am just looking around and doing some asking before I go down loading and installing more software. Thank's, Paw, Bakersfield Ca.

Here's what's better about LimeWire:
  • GUI: skin support, tabbed user interface.
  • "Launch"ing a media file that is being downloaded causes a copy of the partial file to be made first.
  • Offered on more OSes, updated more frequently.

Usually only people with problems come to the boards and post, the most without problems never come here.

About the PRO only Limewire and Bearshare have a PRO version (these two include spyware/crapware in their "free" version)... others and there are a lot of them offer their software for free, the most without spyware. Test clients like Gnucleus or Phex, if you want to know something about the other clients you can ask here. ALl clients connect to the same network, WinMX has only one client Gnutella has a lot of them becaus ethey use a free protocol.

Yes you can use the clients with your firewall, if your settings are correct.

Regarding the spyware thing, the free version adds a "LimeShop" tab which is a web browser, much like WinAmp's minibrowser, so it's not at all bad. I don't think the free version of LimeWire sends personal data to their servers. I remember downloading FreeWire claiming "no spyware", but it had spyware built in anyway! So don't download FreeWire instead

To be complete with the comparison, here's what's better about WinMX, since this is a WinMX vs LimeWire thread:
  • more complex and customizable text highlighting feature.
  • upload and download in one screen.
  • search results take up larger screen real estate without having to adjust a horizontal resize bar.
  • has auto find sources feature.
  • has chat rooms.
  • users have screennames, not just IP addresses.
  • users actually use the chat feature.
  • swarmed downloading doesn't freeze up system.
  • less of a CPU hog.
  • smaller install file (752KiB).
  • works like a windows app (got context menu for every textfield, etc.)
  • always displays a song's length in minutes:seconds format instead of just seconds format.
  • when closing a winmx window, it prompts me with options (exit winmx, send to tray...)
  • "wait for transfers to finish, then exit" option doesn't allow new transfers to start.

Its a WinMX vs Gnutella thread, this side is not only a Limewire side we support all Gnutella clients.

Look what paw wrote. No word about Limewire or did I miss anything?

Not to mention the topic: "What is better HERE?"... this side is called gnutellaforums.com and not limewire.com, hope you can see a difference here.

I think it is partly about philosophy. Gnutella isn't only a file-sharing system, but a network, which might be used for far more purposes, than just getting mp3s (and some projects already begin with that).

It always changes, evolves, and at the moment the traffic for network communication went down to an average of 500B/s, that's less than 0,5kB/s for leaves and about 1,5 to 2 kB/s for Ultrapeers, while many different clients interoperate.
