Best way to XFER files (DSL :: DSL)?

I'm looking for some expert (or at least experienced) opinions:

What're some efficient ways to transfer files from one system to another via the internet?

Both users know each other's public IP addr and they have DSL with a NAT firewall. They want to share files.

1. What if both users have Windows (2000, XP, ME...)?

2. What if cross-platform (Mac, Linux, Windows)?

Using Gnutella/LimeWire you can get the job done (even cross-platform) with Direct Connect... but are there some other better alternatives? Are we cracking eggs with a hammer here? (POP mail DL at 160KB/sec, Gnutella DL at 12KB/sec-20KB/sec... no joy!)

Concerns: Ease of use. Performance. Reliability. User monitoring, control, security...

Assumptions: Users want to share some BIG files (50MB-750MB) from time to time, but mostly within just a small group of users.

Average volume = 10-100MB per day, up to max 500MB per day. Low-cost solution using existing DSL. Email is not a good solution.

Please make some suggestions... thanks!

You could always set up a dc hub. And not make it too exclusive, but not too public. But that's not using any of the Gnutella p2p programs.

LOTR:: Can you please elaborate on dc hub?

Is it this one: http://p2p.info.pl/index.php?module=...5#mainnetworks

DirectConnect - quite a big network (about 600.000 users), but a user-friendly GUI is yet to come; if you like having much too many windows open at once and being constantly confused as to which information on the screen is important, you can try it.

streamload.com :: solution

Much faster than P2P, and does not require your PC and DSL to be left on... upload it, then forget it.

Seems better than p2p or FTP for transferring very large files, point-to-point...

You can upload a file, and email a link for downloading in one step!

Lots of tools and options...

Even the free service is actually usable!

Looks like uploads are always free.

Up to 100Mb per MONTH Downloads FREE with 10 GB storage FREE

Need MORE? $4.95 per month :: 1GB / 12GB

Need MORE? $9.95 per month :: 10GB / 120GB

etc...
