p2p server software?

is there software specific to just sharing files on networks, to help people get their stuff out to the public? I feel the clients are more focused on downloading, any chance of upload specific setups?

LimeWire, like most gnutella servents, is a server and a client, which is why they are referred to as "servents" [sic]. So, LW will do the job for the gnutella network.

If you are looking for a headless server, the code is all there, and the experts who understand the details can probably be contacted at http://www.limewire.org/forum/

You can compile Gtk-Gnutella for topless mode as well and control it over a minimalistic shell interface (with telnet for example). See scripts/make_topless.sh in its sources. This will compile Gtk-Gnutella without any GUI and should have excellent performance.

I don't even know where to start with that stuff

:)

Well, then just load up a client like LimeWire and put the stuff you want to share in the shared folder. Ask a friend to search for one of your titles, and see what happens.

I'm also looking to run limewire as a server on linux RHEL 3.4.5... Any hints appreciated.

Hi! I found this software : Quack Gnutella Server but I don't really understand what it does. I have a pc running 24/24 and I whant to help somehow the gnutella network. The question is: Should I run a console gnutella client or the Quack server?

Hyper-kun September 1st, 2006 01:26 PM

No, Quack has been dead for half a decade now. Nobody would take it serious and I had never heard of it until a few days ago. It certainly looks like a toy/prototype implementation but even on first sight I can see a lot of bugs. Gtk-Gnutella Topless (from current SVN) should be your first choice for server-like purposes i.e. as ultrapeer and/or Gnutella file server. It's highly efficient - especially without the GUI - and up-to-date with Gnutella in most parts.

giFT is *very* popular with spammers but I wouldn't take its rather incomplete Gnutella support seriously.
