Firewall Problem I just bought a new laptop and a new router. I have Windows Vista, the latest version of LimeWire. Apparently, the firewall in my netgear router is blocking my LimeWire from connecting on this computer. How do I set LimeWire to work around the router? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Brandon |
If you could supply these details we may be able to help...As you are aware Vista is new so we will do the best we can.....:rolleyes_2: System details - help us to help you |
Thanks for all the help. Here are the answers: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)=Windows Vista Home Premium 2. (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)=Comcast Cable Internet 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?=The modem is by Motorola, the router is NetGear WGT624 7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)?=House 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.=LimeWire 4.12.11/Java 1.6.0-rc 9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?=Comcast 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?=It says,"Your test worked!" 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.=At the moment, I have 4 computers running on a NetGear router 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.=I've had this program for a long while, so no this isn't my first issue. 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?=Yes |
Having Comcast can cause troubles as they are known to shape p2p...But you could try port forwarding as your router has a Nat Firewall and see if that helps... Here are the instructions for your router.... http://www.portforward.com/english/r...4/Limewire.htm Make sure you follow all the steps, especially the Static IP part.... |
I've had this same ISP, they just changed from Time Warner to Comcast here, and LimeWire has been working. Thanks, I will give that a shot and let you know how it works. |
Well, funny thing, I went to do the first step which was opening LimeWire and it worked then...go figure. |
UPDATE: I opened it today (for the first time since it has worked last) and it didn't want to work. So...I opened LimeWire on another computer that's on the same network and it loaded fine and didn't have the firewall sign over it. It has something to do with McAfee I suppose. Does anyone happen to know a lot of about McAfee? I tried disabling the firewall in McAfee but it still didn't work. The other computer I was talking about on the same network is hardwired though and this one that is having issues is wireless. Would that make any difference? Thanks any help is greatly appreciated. |
There's 2 options for McAfee unistall the whole thing or try this fix, but this person had LW running fine and now has run into trouble again, so where not sure if it was an update that caused this or something else... http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...38&postcount=1 |
Ok, so my best bet is to go to their support site and get the same instructions as he/she did? |
Yep , but as I said it is not guaranteed as that person is now having trouble again.... |
Well, I was just going to remove it and re-install it because I have McAfee free from Comcast on the other computers and LimeWire works (but this McAfee came with teh computer). But, as soon as I went to Uninstall a Program it started acting up. Not all of my programs are in there. This is starting to tick me off. |
It's a vista and McAfee issue at the moment though....Did you ever try Port Forwarding...Maybe you should do that first... |
I couldn't because I couldn't get some kind of IP Adress. It said click this link and I did and Windows Vista wasn't listed to click. So, therefore, I couldn't do it. |
The XP instructions should still be along the same line though, give it ago and see if you can... |
I'll try...I swear it's one problem after another. About the time I get it all running right something screws up. Do you know what might be making the "Uninstall a Program" not display all of my progras? |
Im not sure...sorry... |
Well, I know this isn't anyone job to be doing, but I have searched Microsoft and can't find the free e-mail support (I've done it once before). Could someone help me find it so I can then fix add/remove programs adn then try and fix McAfee and LimeWire? Thank you so much and God bless you!! |
Don't uninstall Limewire from the add/remove programs...It will stuff it up.... You go to Start > All Programs > Limewire ..... I think it should be the same in Vista... Try checking there as well for your McAfee....:rolleyes_2: |
No, I didn't want to uninstall LimeWire, I wanted to uninstall McAfee. Besides, my add/remove programs isn't working right anyway...I found it in All Programs but it doesn't have that uninstall choice. UPDATE: I done a system restore and got everything back to normal, I uninstalled the McAfee taht came with my system and now I'm going to put the one with Comcast. |
Hey Brandon where did you run into the problem with port forwarding. I may be able to help you there with Vista. |

What router/modem are you using |
Ok, well I no longer need any help. I called Comcast, then they told me to call McAfee (which took forever on hold, sheesh) and I got it all worked out. Good luck with your issue, "crackers"! Thanks so much everyone! |
2 Attachment(s) Brandon, maybe I should call McAfee too... or you could post the resolve... Grandpa: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)=Windows Vista Home Premium 2. What firewalls you have?=Windows (exception allowed), McAfee (exception allowed), Netgear router has something builtin and my ZyXel moden has NAT, but is for some reason not accessible anymore. 3. How much ram?=1014 GB 4. Hard Disk space available?=137GB 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)=Earthlink DSL 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?=The modem is by ZyXel p-600 series, the router is NetGear WGT624v6 7. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.=1 wired system not currently using anything but Maplestory, but not able to connect to LW either 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.=1st try for my laptop, only connects when in safe mode and used to connect ok on the wired comp. but no longer. 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?=Yes I've tried port forwarding numerous times. Three services show up under my custom section, but arent working properly either (LW, shareaza and emule; just trying everything). I tried configuring a static ip and ip address could be wrong, too. I've attached to screen prints of my current netgear settings: 1. router status screen and 2. port forwarding screen Thanks guys! Melissa |
Have you set LimeWire to use port 36646. And I see you are running McAfee, It is know to cause problems with LimeWire. You may want to check out the link below. You will have to get a hold of McAfee for there fix or uninstall McAfee and us another AV program. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=66843 By the way you appear to be propperley forwarded |
At least I forwarded correctly.......... I believe its the McAfee, too... otherwise, why would I have a full 5 bar green connection in safe mode w/o McA running..... I wish Brandon had posted the resolve... maybe he still will. I can call them, I'm just sick of the hours upon hours I've spent on the phone with tech support for netgear, earthlink and dell...... ah..... the bliss of owning new technology! Thanks a lot Grandpa! Melissa |
You can uninstall McAfee and install Avast it is free and is among the top rated AV out there. You can get it at the link below. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html |
Ok, so I uninstalled McA and I get a full green bar connection status, BUT I am still behind a firewall somewhere... I have completely disable windows firewall and upon trying another p2p application, I got a message saying it was a NAT problem... I have the netgear firewall disabled and did some research... it appears my modem (the zyxel 600) is the culprit (or one of them). Unfortunately I cannot access my modems configuration by using the 192.168.1.1 or any other sequence... the only place I can get to with these is the routers configuration pages. I called earthlink (the provider of the modem) spent nearly an hour with them... arguing even... to be told they dont know how to help me.... I asked for a senior rep, but got lost in the 'transfer'... so I am not quite back to square one, but square two, I would say. I read the forum threads you sent and other than the McA, cant find the solution.......... Any ideas? Anybody? I can use limewire and it downloads fairly efficiently, but have a question... Can LW handle torrents? I cant seem to open them in LW manually, nor can I change what the saved torrents use to open to LW.... Thanks for the assistance, Melissa |
