If it's not my firewall it's another thing...

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
Windows Vista
2. What firewalls you have?
MacAfee
3. How much ram?
512 mb
4. Hard Disk space available?
80 gb.
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
Westell 6100
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)?
Home(house)
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
Most recent Version
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?
Verizon
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
Your test worked!
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
NO
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?
New problem and yes I see the brick wall

Well there is all my info that you may need to help me.

My problem is that Limewire opens and evrything but won't connect. It jacks my internet as you've probably heard about before and I need to restart/disable network connections.

The error message displays after about one minute at one red bar.

It says my machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or is being blocked by a firewall. I have uninstalled my MacAfee firewall and disabled my windows firewall and it still won't connect. And I'm pretty damn sure I have internet...(Here I am)I think it has something to do with Vista because it worked on my Windows XP perfectly, I never had a single problem. I've tried every single thing that has been suggested to me by fellow members that have created a temporary fix of about 10 minutes of precious Limewire time but that is all.>>>:bangh:

All I want more than this new computer is Limewire to work wit it...mouth watering...:gimmimore:

birdy March 20th, 2007 05:25 PM

Do you have Java 1.6? Even if you do, try reinstalling. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before installing the new one.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Try port forwarding for your Westell. Here are the instructions.
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm

LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within your router must all be the same number.

larsenator4000 March 21st, 2007 11:00 AM

I have 2 questions

Is the port fowarding only if I have a router? and how do I tell what version of Java I have?

larsenator4000 March 21st, 2007 11:02 AM

WOW I went to port foward and went to the website and when I clicked on configuration like it said it didn't open a new page it just brought down a drop list. I didn't no what to click.

i also reinstalled java using offline version, nothing as well.

uninstalled macafee firewall, nothing.

turned off windows firewall, nothing

mabe it is this whole port fowarding thing...btw I have no idea the meaning of.

larsenator4000,

When you click on "Configuration", from the drop down list click "Services", then proceed with the instructions. If you run into more problems with portforwarding post back. I have a westell also. See the pic below.

larsenator4000 March 22nd, 2007 03:57 PM

When I do it requires a sign in and once again I do not know what to put in.

6_pac March 22nd, 2007 08:12 PM

You should use the same username and password that you use to login into your verizon email account.

If that doesn't work, try username: admin, password: password or try username: admin, password: admin.

If that fails, don't be afraid to call tech support. They can reset your password for you and tell you what it is. Most of the time when you call you get a level one technician who just reads prompts from a screen. They're not much good if you have a real problem, but they can get your password for you ;).

larsenator4000 March 24th, 2007 11:24 AM

Maybe it IS my firewall!!!

Alright heres a new problem that I have. Instead of port fowarding I restored the defaults on my Limewire options and restarted it. It worked perfectly fine and when I was done I disconnected it. When I went to do it again my connection got to 3 bars when out of the corner of my eye I saw a symbol pop up. It was a red arrow that was spinning and it went away after 1/2 a second so I couldn't see what it was. But when it popped up my connection went down to one bar again. The symbol was in the bar at the bottom of my desktop in the bottom right corner by the network connection, and Macafee symbol. Does anyone have any idea wtf this means?

6_pac March 24th, 2007 01:29 PM

Have you tried disabling Mcafee and just using the windows firewall.

Grandpa March 24th, 2007 01:36 PM

Or uninstalling McAfee

larsenator4000 March 24th, 2007 03:15 PM

I have uninstalled my macafee firewall and disabled my windows firewall and then tried but that worked for like 15 minutes...wait maybe my windows firewall reenabled automatically by the timer! I'll update my prob later.

mickjapa108 March 24th, 2007 03:30 PM

Verizon

larsenator4000 March 24th, 2007 03:43 PM

Yes verizon thanks for the comment!:mad2:  :nono: :bangh:

Anyways I was wondering what a remote firewall was because when it jacks my internet it also shows a diagnosis if I choose to so I did. When I ran it it said that a remote firewall may be blocking connections and that I should call my ISP about it.

Should I call them and ask about remote firewall or just ask them if they suddenly blocked gnutella connections or if not let me know what...

BTW the firewall was off and Limewire still didn't connect.

mickjapa108 March 25th, 2007 04:13 AM

Larsenator. Hi.
You need to ask direct Questions, Are you filtering, shaping,or blocking any ports using P2P networks.?
Ask!! What is your policy on P2P ?
Insist, that they give there reply in writing. That makes them come clean.
If they confirm what I believe, Then vote with your MAC code and get an ISP
That Respects your right to choose what Software you run on your computer.

P.S.. Help keep open information sharing alive & free.
We are not sheep to be herded into lines & channeled to except whatever ulterior motive, price,or advert they wish to stuff on us.
I have a car, I use it on the world wide road,(Network) Now! I can choose to
Kill with it,or transport grandma to the shop, the choice is always mine.
LimeWire is legal software, & you should have the right to use it, or abuse it
Peace.

larsenator4000 March 25th, 2007 05:29 AM

How do I tell if I'm blocking ports or whatever and what did you mean about rights to software on my comp. and what not?

Do you mean I should call Verizon and ask them if they are blocking P2P Programs because they weren't before when I had my other computer. Limewire only gave me trouble when I switched to Vista on a newer fatser computer and I think that is more than a coincidence.

mickjapa108 March 25th, 2007 06:03 AM

Its suspected, that Verison are blocking ports, not you!.
LimeWire is legal software, Its on your comp,(its my opinion) other company's should have no legal right to close it, or interfere with its running.
Ok.
Peace.

larsenator4000 March 25th, 2007 08:25 AM

Alright now I'm pissed. I downloaded Shareaza,Bearshare,Forstwire, and the only one that worked was bearshare but anything that's worth downloading is in the wrong format and can't be put on an ipod so I got rid of that too!

I've been trying to solve my problem everday for about a week now and I'm about ready to purchase itunes songs...

If it helps as I've been gaining info form the different P2P programs:

When I got Shareaza it mentioned my firewall and the port fowarding thing(Which I might add is a total pain in the ***), so I'm gonna go ahead and try the port foward crap. Now when I tried before and I didn't know what to put in the sign in someone mentioned calling Verizon or someone to reset my password and I have no idea what the number would be so if anyone knows what that number would be I would appreciate the help.

If this doesn't work then I give up...I can afford some bucks...but not all of this crap.

6_pac March 25th, 2007 08:59 AM

For Verizon dial 1-800-567-6789.

larsenator4000 March 25th, 2007 01:58 PM

Thanx guys I appreciate the help. I'll be sure to let you know if it solves my problem or not. If it doesn't I'll need some suggestions as to what I should use.

larsenator4000 March 28th, 2007 04:36 PM

A Huge Update!!!

Alright guys I called Verizon and the man began a screen sharing session between our computers in which he can see and control my screen...so cool.

Anyway he wanted to see the error message displayed by Limewire, and I told him it will probably disconnect our session but what the hell?

I opened Limewire and of course it robbed my internet and said communication session timed out! Mean while the asian man is on the other side going quote "What did you do to my computer!!!"

He was kidding of course but I did indeed freeze his computer...good stuff...

But after all of that he said everything was working fine, Verizon does not block P2P programs, and that my internet connection has nothing to do with my problem as it is perfectly fine.

He said that he couldn't help me anymore and that port fowarding and anything of the sort could not resolve the problem. That's great cuz port fowarding is a pain in the ***!!:yikes:

Anyway he told me to call up Macafee and ask them some questions about my problem to see if the problem is the firewall(I just can't make up my mind can I?)

After all the message displayed by Limewire did say that if it wasn't my internet connection that it had to be a firewall and that leaves nothing but the Macafee firewall to blame...windows firewall is a good boy...or is it?

Hope this info helps...I'm going to call Macafee once I can find the blasted number!

Meanwhile does anyone have any sugestions...I already uninstalled my Macafee firewall and everything...

mickjapa108 March 29th, 2007 02:18 AM

Ok,
thanks for the feedback, gives something to work with.

Macafee web site, may have a tool to remove all reg entries, TRY THAT FIRST.
If not you can go to Start/search, search for Macafee

Now Go to, Start/Search/click on all files n folders/more advanced options/
& make sure, case sensitive, is not ticked. (all other boxes should be ticked)
Now!!, Put Macafee in box, (all or part of file name) & click search.
Delete everything found, including Prefetch folder, (I mean everything)
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.
Then search for whatever the Macafee company name is, same method.
For instance Nortons name is Symantec (registered company name)
And Delete what Macafee files you find.
Re start comp & try L/W again.
Let us know how you get on.
Peace.

larsenator4000 March 29th, 2007 02:27 AM

mmmmm....that's my only virus protection and we kinda paid for a 3 year so...yea...

Bearshare connected so wtf?

mickjapa108 March 29th, 2007 02:36 AM

Ok
If bearshare works, it connects to the same network, so in theiry you should
get the same search resolts, So give it a try.
Let us know how it works with Macafee.

P.S.. Its not the only firewall you have, You also have the option of using windows firewall.

wondering why March 29th, 2007 03:08 AM

Limewire + Vista + McAfee = NO CONNECTION

It's not just the McAfee firewall that's the problem it's the whole security program and as quoted by the limewire developers themselves unless McAfee do something about a fix it is just not going to work...

So you have 2 options get rid of McAfee (the whole thing) or get rid of Limewire....
Disabling the firewall is not going to fix your problem....

Also half the time you call your ISP customer support and they don't even know what a Nat firewall is....So even if you do get rid of McAfee you may still have to Port Forward and it's really not that hard....

This is not my computer it is the family computer and I'm pretty damn sure that my mom would not approve of me removing a 3 year subscription to Macafee that SHE PAID FOR. I have conected 4 differnet occasions now to Limewire with all firewalls on and all. One time I left it connected for 2 days and it kept working!!! It stopped working when I was dowloading music like it hit a limit or something...but when I wasn't using it it was fine! You can't say that those 2 DAYS were some huge error within Macafee...

larsenator4000 March 29th, 2007 01:41 PM

Well i uninstalled mcafee............................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...............................(Dramatic Pause)............................................ ............

Please do let us know what works and what doesn't within McAfee...

You have done well....

6_pac March 29th, 2007 07:48 PM

:aweof: Big congrats larsenator4000, :xirokrotima: :xeri_ok1ani: :D.

Any info you can post is sure to help other vista users :).

mickjapa108 March 30th, 2007 05:41 AM

Were all rooting for you mate (Nice One)
Dont forget to reboot your comp after the addition of each component of
Macafee, then when you find the guilty component, there may be a setting that
can be reconfigured.

larsenator4000 March 30th, 2007 11:13 AM

Well guys it is working fine with just the virus scan component but later tonight I'm going to install one by one until I figure out wich specific component it is.

Full details on the matter are under general vista support
(The Mcafee Limewire Solution)

wondering why March 30th, 2007 11:25 AM

This was what was discovered a little while back....http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...3&postcount=45

larsenator4000 March 30th, 2007 12:23 PM

I saw that but it wasn't exactly detailed...

anyway it is still working with the personal firewall wich we thought was the problem in the 1st place...

installing the next one...

larsenator4000 March 30th, 2007 12:41 PM

so far I have installed virus scan, personal firewall, and privacy service.
This leaves no other component but the spam killer left to install. Now we could assume that that component is the problem but maybe it may still work. In that case all we needed to do in the first place was reinstall McAfee in the 1st place!

larsenator4000 March 30th, 2007 01:10 PM

Well that's just wrong...

All the freakin components are installed and it is still working perfectly fine. Which means after all of that annoying crap I went through and pages of suggestions here it is...and I would have never fixed it if I didn't find that a disk with Mcafee came with the computer. I guess this is a good thing.... I get all the benifits of McafeeWhoever has trouble needs to try to reinstall and we will know if it is required to install each component one at a time.

wondering why March 31st, 2007 04:07 AM

Hmmm that seems strange doesn't it...Just watch when it updates and see if anything changes...
There was a person who posted a little while back and he said this...
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...38&postcount=1
But not to long after that he came back to say this...
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=68232
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=68236

So it still remains a mystery...
