Canadian: I do not mind you asking but I'm afraid I cannot answer that question. Please believe me when I say that the option of leaving it off (which may be tempting in this situation) is not recommended.

BasRuiter: Tried everything exactly as described. Updated the registry with your script - took the value from the expert setting in Limewire (firewall: manual port forwarding) - update was successfully, tried Limewire and IE, did not work, rebooted the machine with the new settings, tried again but still no sucess!

Question: I only included the one firewall forwarding port mentioned in the Limewire expert (firewall) settings - not the inbound port at the top of the same page (different port), not the Windows NETBIOS File sharing ports (different ports), which are in McAfee currently excluded (different ports). Pls advise if I should retry including these in the registry update as well.

Deleted McAffee- Still Have The Problem

I'm not so sure it's McAffee. I deleted McAffee and installed PC Tools Firewall. The problem persists, ie I get knocked off the internet when I run Limewire. I do not have this problem otherwise.

I have a new machine running VISTA. I have Limewire 4.12.11 and Java 1.6.0_01.

Suggestions?

I'm leaving this here, even though it's a double post, just in case there are issues with uninstalling McAfee (eg leftovers remaining) which may cause problems & that BasRuiter might be able to respond to.

To narrow down where the issue lies, could you try the following:

- click Start
- click Run
- type: services.msc
- click OK
- right-click on the McAfee Redirector service
- click Stop
- try LimeWire again to see if the issue still occurs

Awsome, that worked. DL time is still slow as hell but it's working. Thanks!

For those people who are having problems with McAfee 2007 + LimeWire + Vista, could you try the beta for the 2008 version and let us know if you are still experiencing the same issue?

You can create an account and download the 2008 beta here:

1. What McAfee programs are installed, and which version?
Security Center 8.1.173
Virus 12.1.110
Personal Firewall 9.1.108

2. Are you able to identify which McAfee program is the cause of the issue?
Havent tried un-installing McAfee

3. What version of LimeWire (Pro) are you using?
4.18.3 Pro

4. What ports have you configured for LimeWire? Does the issue exist if you try different ports?
Have tried different ports

5. Opening ports in the McAfee Firewall:
- open McAfee SecurityCenter
- select Internet & Network
- select the Firewall protection
- click the Advanced button
- click System Services (on the left)
- on the next page, in the list, scroll down and check the box beside Windows file sharing

- in the same list you can try to Add the incoming ports used by LimeWire to see if this makes a difference.

6. What other solutions / work-arounds have you tried already?
I have even gone as far as doing port forwarding on my router as well. I have a windows XP computer on the same router that works fine with limewire and is running McAfee as well. I have also put it in windows xp sp2 compat, and it doesnt work. upnp is enabled, I have done just about everything I can do on my end other than delete my firewall. Disabling the firewall temporarily did not work. Running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1. There is NO McAfee REDIRECT listed in services on this computer to disable.

Hello tempestrogue,

There are no known issues regarding McAfee 2008 (Security 8.x) and LimeWire, on Windows Vista. The issue described in this thread concernes McAfee 2007.

The 2008 version does indeed not have the McAfee Redirector service.
