Appropriate Permissions??

I have LW on my desktop w/Windows XP, and I just got a loptop w/Vista. I downloaded LW and when I go to start LW I get this error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and nothing is working. Someone PLEASE help me.

Make sure you are your computers administrator...;)

Yes I am the user administrator.

1. Make sure you have Java 1.6 ((JRE) 6.0) Download Java software from Sun Microsystems & choose Offline installer.
Edit: For earlier versions of Java such as Java 1.6, see the Java Archive.

2. Quote from one of the LW Programmers: "Vista tried to outsmart itself in dealing with folder permission problems. If a user tries to save a file to a location outside of their user directory, it will create a pseudo-directory somewhere else that only the running program will see. When that program runs, it will appear as if the file is in the expected location, but no other programs nor exploring from the desktop will see it.

If you're using Vista and want to see your files outside of LimeWire, you MUST make the save directory somewhere within your user directory."

3. Go to Desktop
Right Click On LimeWire Icon (or Installer)
Go to the Compatibility Tab
Go Down To Where It Says "Privilege Level"
Check the "Run this program as an administrator" box
Then Click "OK"
Open LimeWire
When Pop Up Asking For Security Permission Comes Up Click Allow
LimeWire Will Open and Vista Should Work

For Vista, Windows 7 or 8 or later, set Java to Run as Administrator:
Choice of two techniques. Right-click the Java installer and choose to Run as Admin., or else search and find the Java.exe file and right-click the file in search result and right-click and choose Run as Administrator. For some odd reason, this seems to help with LW connecting and some other issues.

Ahhhhhhhhh! I just noticed the fine print on the downloads showing online and offline. I mistakenly downloaded online. What should I do?

Lord of the Rings September 26th, 2007 11:28 PM

Nothing major. Not sure if it will make a difference but you could download the offline version & re-install.

What I'd recommend is deleting your LW preferences before you try to open the program. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html That way next time you open LW, you can reset your path to a download folder within your own account area or area of control.

Vista User access to Limewire 8.18.6

I have installed Limewire on 32 bit Vista SP1 using an Administrator account and all is well until I log into a Regular User Account at which point Limewire will not connect to the Gnutella network. I have returned to the Admin logon and changed the permissions of the Limewire exe in Program Files to full for the specific accounts as well as for all Users and it makes no difference.

Somehow I think the answer is partly in what you have typed below but I am just not seeing it. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
