Seems that you have been infected with ad or spyware, or worst still your machine probably came pre-installed with ad or spyware (I'm told that PC/laptop makers do this to keep the final consumer price down).

A few things to do, run Adaware 2007 and Spybot (both are free), inspect your HD for rouge "stand alone" programs (like SendMail.exe) and delete them.

I am not sure about this point for Vista but in XP Windows Messenger allowed internet spammers to bombard your PC with adverts, if this is still the case for Vista then switch off Windows Messenger (or whatever Vista is calling it).

Finally, download Windows Defender (which is free but also system intensive) and begin to use regularly.
