If I update can I put new version on top of old

I can't seem to get my version of Limewire to connect beyond 1 green bar.
Yesterday I installed the latest service pack for windows but I don't know if that would have anything to do with it. I thought maybe updating to the latest version might do the trick but I want to know if I can just copy the new version over the top of my current version which is 4.16.7.
My Firewall which is part of my Norton internet security doesn't seen to be the problem; so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or ideas as to why it suddenly refuses to connect beyong 1 green bar.

Do you mean can you install the update without removing your existing LW? Then yes - your existing version gets removed automatically as part of the installation process. But just remember that if your existing version's Pro then you'll lose that version unless you have the Pro installer saved.

Are you running XP or Vista? I have XP & installing SP3 made no difference to any p2p apps' connection.

I guess you've tried all the fixes here: If LW 4 Will Not Connect

Which version are you updating to?
Some people have had issues with LW 5 - it's quite different to LW 4. Make sure to read the LimeWire FAQ and User Guide

There's a Beta version out, if you don't mind using a Beta, which seems to be quite good so far... some tools that were missing from 5.1 are slowly returning: LimeWire 5.2.2 (Beta) - Lime Wire

Check out the changelog to see exactly what's what: Changelog - LimeWire

You might need to remove & then re-add LW to your Norton firewall. Norton can be a bit funny that way sometimes. If you install a new version of LW you will definitely need to remove & re-add LW to the firewall.

Hey Robert, long time no see. Hows you man??

We didn't see any difficulty going to SP3 way back when, but seems that every time MS comes out with an update, it mucks up my son LW 4.18.x.

NIS2009 definitely Wasn't the issue but all of a sudden showed we had a firewall issue.

I just deleted the Prefs. folder and fetched a new Gnutella.net file and was good to go.

Me thinks MS's Malicious Software Removal Tool has something to do with it.
But that's just me.

Good Luck. :)

I'm not sure what to do to be honest.
All of a sudden I only have one green bar after connecting and I'm sorta wondering what the best options would be.
Thanks for your interest Remoc. I'm OK and yes it has been quite a while since I was on these forums, glad you still remember me.
Been lurking nearly every day but after my disastrous start at giving advice and a big rap over the knuckles from Peerless
I thought it better to leave the advice giving to those with a bit more experience. :)

Hi ,Back again.
I tried most of the things in the section (if Limewire will not connect) and none of them seem to work.
I've done the temporary switching off of my firewall and AV and tried to get a connection without success.
And I've uninstalled Limewire twice (using the start menu) and re-installed it.
I've made sure that only one firewall is working and it is set to auto which is what it was when Limewire was working, so I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment as to what to try next. I'm not sure whether updating to version 5 will help or not so I haven't tried it.
Do you think I should update my Java Runtime environment (mine is still the basic Java 1.6.0 that came with Vista) would that help?
(I've already downloaded the java 1.6.14 latest version JRE already and that's sitting in the download folder if you think that might help.)
Any and all suggestions will be tried in the hope that I can get some connection to the network.
Thanks!

Try this gnutella.net file http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...tml#post343558

Sometimes re-installing Java can help for some odd reason get LW re-connected.
