Last week I could search documents and find what I was looking for, this week, no results are found

I'm using an old version of Limewire (4.9.37). I am also on a computer that is running windows vista 64-bit. After much trouble getting Limewire to work at all, I have run into this problem - can anyone offer a solution?

Last week I could search an author name and I would receive plenty of search results - this week I receive zero. I've tried different author names, book titles but get zero results. The selection for ebooks on Limewire is amazing. I wish I could get this to work again.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Do results for other searches show? (music, video etc.)

Are the connection bars all green or blue? (UP or LW Pro) and does it have a steady connection? (no red bars showing at all)

llarochelle September 14th, 2009 06:41 PM

Limewire Pro 4.9.37
Blue bars = Turbo Charged, steady connection
I can do other searches such as for music and I get search results, but
when I choose to do a document search, there are no search results.

It's the weirdest thing, Limewire was working fine last week, I found all sorts of books. I havent changed a thing on my computer, no new software, no setting changes, nothing - everything works except Limewire when I'm searching documents.

Hope this helps.

Try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within LW's options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things to the way you like them.
Vista users: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

You could also try disabling ultrapeer capabilities (tools > options > speed > tick 'disable ultrapeer capabilities > apply > ok) & see if that makes any difference.

:)

Usually those periods of no or little search results only lasts a few days. A week maximum AFAIK.

llarochelle September 15th, 2009 12:27 PM

I have tried the suggested fix of deleting the preferences folder. This still did not correct my problem. I had ultrapeer disabled already so I tried enabling it. Still - no LIT files show up. It's almost like that file type is being blocked somehow. I am now receiving very few PDF results but no LIT files at all. Is there possibly a universal block on these types of files?

Thank you for your helpful suggestions, I'll keep trying until we resolve this.

Ohhhhhhhh.........
Document Sharing: To better combat the inadvertent sharing of sensitive personal information, documents are not allowed to be shared with the P2P Network. Documents may only be shared with Friends.

Well... that sucks!

AFAIK that's applying to LW 5 users.
And LW 5 users who do want to share documents with everyone (P2P Network) can do that by changing LW's options. LW 5 isn't allowing document sharing by default - it's not stopping people from sharing documents if they want to ;)

I just did a non specific search (using 4.9.37) for lit files & found several hundred, so they are around. Rather than using the Documents search, try using All Types. Try searching for author name lit or author name .lit or book title LIT etc etc.

An 'All Types' search for Author name ebook also generated results including lit files. What you find is probably going to depend on the popularity of the author that you're looking for. Don't forget to try searching at different times of day - as people in other time zones log on & off, files available for download will change.

Something else that you can do is connect to different Ultrapeers. UPs are people who handle a lot of connections & help you to search. Because you can't search the whole network at once, changing the UPs that you're connected to will effect the search results that you see.

Click on LW's Connections tab.
On the Connections page, you'll see UPs that you're connected to. Check in the Time column & see which ultrapeer has been connected for the longest time.
Right click on that host > Remove. That ultrapeer will be replaced by another. Now start a new search for your file, or search again from the download window.
If you don't see any improvement in results, remove the next ultrapeer. And so on...

See whether that helps at all :)

And just double check that lit or .lit isn't listed in LW's keyword filter (tools > options > filters > keyword).

I guess since I had LW 5 installed at one time, now pro 4.9.37 wont work - at least in finding .LIT file types (*sigh)

I can find music still.

There is a downside to having win vista 64-bit, stuff isnt compatible.

llarochelle September 16th, 2009 11:45 AM

Thanks for trying anyway.

Sleepless September 16th, 2009 03:42 PM

If it's some block made by LW 5, it should still be fixable. After uninstalling, try removing anything Limewire including the program folder, incomplete, appdata and manually removing any Limewire registry entries, and then after reboot run some kind of registry cleaner e.g. CCleaner. Then reinstall Limewire.

Lord of the Rings September 16th, 2009 11:27 PM

Also with LW 5, you may need to (1) enable the sharing of documents .. found in first window of options. (2) go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Files, and click on the File Extensions management button. Make sure file types like pdf, LIT, etc. are checked under the Documents section.

LW LW 4, Tools -> Options -> Sharing -> Types. Make sure the file types you wish to share are both listed & checked. By default, .lit & .doc & .rtf are not checked for LW 4 AFAIK but I might be wrong.

Something else to keep in mind is, if you keep continually searching the same search terms over & over, your ultrapeers 'might' start blocking the searches. This may take some days to recover from.

Can a person be blocked from searching say LIT files, but still be able to search mp3's?

llarochelle September 17th, 2009 08:59 AM

Actually after thinking about it, i "assumed" that i connected to different UP each time I logged on. But usually i'm trying to locate a book or two that will complete a series and therefore i am searching for the same file over and over.

I made sure that .lit file types are added in my LW 4.

I did completely clean my machine of all limewire files including the hidden ones and reinstalled LW 4. What I'm wondering now is, if more and more ppl use LW 5 and LW 5 by default doesnt share .LIT files, then most likely there'll be less and less found.

Thank you for helping me.

Lord of the Rings September 17th, 2009 10:35 AM

If you are using LW 4.9 .. you will not be able to download from people using versions 4.17 or 4.18 or version 5.

If you are using 4.16 or higher you will be able to download from 4.17 or higher.

Try varying the way you search. ;)

llarochelle November 1st, 2009 05:41 AM

I've tried using LW 4.18 and I am still not finding .LIT files any longer. I've also tried using LW 4.9.37 on a laptop that still runs Win XP and it's not finding .LIT files either. It's sad. LW was such a good source too. I've gone back to LW 4.9.39 Pro. I like the way it works in finding mp3 files.

llarochelle November 1st, 2009 09:39 AM

Does not being able to find .LIT files anymore, have anything to do with license violations or something?

llarochelle December 2nd, 2009 07:39 AM

still surprisingly frustrated that I can't get .lit files anymore.

Lord of the Rings December 2nd, 2009 12:19 PM

Go to LW's menu bar, Tools -> Options -> Filters .. check keyword filters & make sure .lit is not listed. Also check extensions & make sure .lit is not listed. If it is listed as being filtered out then select it & click the remove button. :)

I can't test about finding .lit files at present since I'm overseas, but will try in over a week's time after I return. There are of course alternatives to .lit depending on what topical files you are after.

llarochelle December 3rd, 2009 05:13 AM

I have nothing listed in the filters. .LIT files was listed in 'Shared Extensions' . I've tried it both way, taking it out and keeping it in.

When you click on 'About Limewire' it says I'm using Limewire 4.9.37 Pro, Java 1.6.0_16. I've tried running Limewire on my desktop that is running Win Vista 64-bit and also on my laptop that runs Win XP.

On the Vista machine, I have Java(TM) 6 Update 3 and 16. I wonder if this is some kind of compatibility issue.

Sorry! I'm just one of those ppl that like to figure out things when they don't work. Like why doesn't this work when it used to work. It frustrates me. I'll keep trying at my end until it's fixed. There is no better place to get the .lit files, with Limewire the selection was amazing. Thanks for trying to help me.
