Wireshare Start issue

Hi, my wireshare won't open as there's a reported bug upon loading.

Here's the reported bug

Java version 1.8.0_261 from Oracle Corporation
Windows 10 v. 10.0 on x86

Yup, I got the same results with both 5.6.6 and 6.0.0

I believe I deleted my original post by accident so I'll just leave a repost of the bug for the developers here

What language do you have selected?

runt66 August 6th, 2020 05:33 PM

English i hope

runt66 August 6th, 2020 05:42 PM

Actually on my wireshare properties , under details it is saying language neutral .

BigJx August 6th, 2020 06:03 PM

The reason I asked is that the error is occurring in the internationalization code. So I thought it may be an issue with a language file.

I have English selected.
it just starts temporarily and just exits completely once the error/send bug window is closed btw, so im only able to even just check settings once that window isnt closed.

I have found and translated that german thread ;
it is interesting that our jerry friends also seem to have a java problem .

runt66 August 8th, 2020 09:50 PM

And they also have a startup bug or problem

Yeah I checked those posts first too, and pretty much came to the conclusion it was a java issue. Initially I tried changing java max_cache size variables etc in windows environment variables, deleting the downloads.dat and editing the lib dll's made no difference for me unfortunately. still doesn't work till this day.

BigJx August 18th, 2020 04:55 PM

This startup issue that some of you may be experiencing is occurring in a third party application that WireShare uses called icu4j. What I believe is causing it to fail is that the Java revision number is greater than 255. Try uninstalling Java 1.8.0.261 and install Java 1.8.0.251 and report back here if that resolves the issue.

Hope you don't mind if I throw in a wildcard possibility. Possibly the icu4j version is outdated to handle some of the newer translations (charset converter coverage ~ that the particular java version can handle.) From that I can ascertain there's constant updates in what unicode icu4j can handle. Java itself has very limited and outdated unicode support.

FYI, I can confirm that the Wireshare startup problem occured after Java JRE was updated from version 1.8.0.251 to version 1.8.0.261. After reverting to Java 1.8.0.251 (32-bit version), Wireshare starts again. Tested with Wireshare 5.6.6 and 6.0.0.

It would be appreciated if an updated version of Wireshare can be made available that works with Java 1.8.0.261 and later.

BigJx August 19th, 2020 07:58 AM

The icu4j.jar file has been replaced with an updated version in the WireShare source code so this issue will be corrected in the next release.

Sorry gang , 1000 apologies , but photobucket it seems is no longer compatible with gnutella forums ; now trying to use postimage but all i can produce is little thumbnails ;

have deleted java 261 and installed java 1.8.0.251 , i hope , but wireshare wont open and this error message is the only thing coming up .

Image posted is fine, not a thumbnail. Not sure why you were trying to repost the same image. Images posted on the forum are by default always in thumbnail mode. Click on the image and you will see what I mean.

As bigjx suggested next update will fix the problem (if it's the same problem.) You might need to downgrade WireShare in meantime.
Whilst you installed an earlier version java 8, you might possibly have two versions installed. I guess you could check your Add/Remove Control Panel to verify this. I don't know about these days but in the past Windows sometimes a reboot would see the java properly initialised (system's java pointers/references cleaned and corrected) after installation. Though my reasoning might not be accurate. :D

CornelisJ August 20th, 2020 01:04 AM

@runt66, Wireshare needs the 32-bit version of Java, and you have probably installed the 64-bit version. In first instance I did the same and then I also got this error message.

Download link for 32-bit version of Java 1.8.0.251 (I hope this links works for you):
https://javadl.oracle.com/webapps/do...ndows-i586.exe

CornelisJ August 20th, 2020 01:14 AM

@runt66:
You probably installed the 64-bit version of Java, while Wireshare needs the 32-bit version. I just posted a download link, but that post is now being moderated (probably because I included a link). The name of the 32-bit java installation file is jre-8u251-windows-i586.exe

This will not help as all previous versions of WireShare/LimeWire that use that outdated icu4j are affected. You would need to downgrade Java until the next release.

Always use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel or the Java uninstaller to remove Java as it will remove the system registry entries also. If you simply delete the Java version from the file system then then registry entries will point to an invalid location. If this is the case then you should try reinstalling Java 1.8.0_261 and then uninstalling it again via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Also, as stated by CornelisJ, you should ensure that you have the i586 version of Java installed.

NOT SURE ABOUT POOR ELLIOT BUT MY WIRESHARE IS WORKING BEAUTIFULLY ;
IT SEEMS THAT THE KEY TO SUCCESS MAY HAVE BEEN THAT 32-bit java installation file ;

THANK YOU ALL GUYS FOR YOUR TIME AND TROUBLE .

papa_29 August 26th, 2020 04:37 PM

Do you know when a new release of WireShare will be?

LdNyaxx August 27th, 2020 11:39 PM

bump, any resolve?
..so after posting this I got to the end of thread and saw the workaround with java 251. It seem a outdated thread tho, worked fine just a few days ago but as of today aug 28th 2020, had to delete java and reinstall the 251. Something changed in java or win10 to warrant this?

Lord of the Rings August 28th, 2020 05:12 AM

Probably due to the java sub-version going higher than 255 and that broke the limit of the 3rd party icu4j within WireShare which expects there to not be a sub-version higher than 255.

Maybe your java was (automatically?) updated from 251 to 261, and then Wireshare does not start anymore. To avoid that Java is updated you can disable checking for updates in the java control panel, until a new version of Wireshare becomes available that can work with a java sub-version number higher than 255.

See https://sourceforge.net/projects/wireshare/files/.
The program does start up now with the latest version of Java (1.8.0_261) installed.

All good here also, with the newest version of WireShare.

elliot12345 August 30th, 2020 08:51 PM

Been a while folks lol. I can confirm that the 6.0.1 solves the compatibility issue with the Java 1.8.0_261 update and works perfectly, thanks for the troubleshooting help though everyone.:xeri_ok1ani:
