Save Directory
 

Why can't I save to the Windows XP directory My Document\My Music ?? When I try to set that as the save directory, it tells me it is an invalid directory for saving files.

In windows xp there is no C:\my documents\my music directory ... the my c:...\my music directory is going to be located in:

c:\doccuments and settings \[user name]\My Documents\My Music ... where user name is your logon name.

thanks for the replay. I was just trying to save time in typing out the post. That is the directory i tried. No luck.

Download the latest java 2 from sun microsystems ... 1.4 i think. xp shipped with a java problem. this is the fix.

also, save the files to another directory, then move them to the directory that you are trying to save to ... sometimes this will releave the "file lock" on the directory ... works on NT4, Novell and Win2K servers ... dont know why it wouldn't work on XP ....

Make sure there is a My Music folder in the directory you are trying to save to.

Make sure its shared ... check its permissions, make sure everyone has full access.

My guess is you are logged on as "user name" ... make sure you have administrative privilages in Control Pannel > Users

If I think of anything else I'll post ... personally ... I dont care for XP ... it looks good but runs slow, and still has too many compatability issues that need to be worked out. I'll stick with Win2K

Actually, I came up with this problem one day. It just *out of the blue* decided anything in the My Documents folder was invalid. I'll bet reinstalling Java 1.4 will solve the issue, because all versions of LimeWire I have now do this, but I don't mind having the folder elsewhere> I just put a shortcut in the C:\My Documents\Music Files to the LimeWire folder. Simple. :)

And I truly do hate having the My Docs folder buried in the docs & settings folder on a one user box so I relocated it to the norm. So the unable to find folder is no excuse for Java/Lime not to find it. Even my MS-DOS disk found it.

Is there a real fix?
 

I don't find either of the resolutions acceptable.

I recently upgraded from v2.3x to v2.4.4 and encountered the identical error at the beginning of this thread.

The problem is that I use WMP for playing MP3s and have a ton of files/playlists that point to the [username]/My Music folder.

I can't just move all my existing files to another folder so that LimeWire can save there, because it will break my playlists.

Also, it is a pain to download a file and then move it to a folder that is "LimeWire compliant".

This has been working before with prior versions, so what changed to break it?

I agree. It seems like the new version took a step backwards or something. I used to have no problems saving my files to this directory until 2.4.4 came out. Can we get a patch??

Even with LW 2.9.6 I keep getting the message that (the folder I was saving to with no problem yesterday) is not a valid directory for saving files and I should pick another. I have playlist pointers and incomplete folders scattered around my disk now. And when my daughters logon and save anywhere ...Latest Java, Win XP Pro updated regularly, Media Player 9. I cannot get the read-only tags on the folders to stay unchecked, so I woder if it is a Windows vs. users plot.Please believe that I've tried each fix posted and keep having valid directories one day yanked from under my feet the next.
This works so much more smoothly on my Mac with iTunes.

I think that problem was caused by Windows Media Player 9. I don't know exactly why, but it seems to set the saving directory to read-only if you add your downloaded music to the playlist.

I'm not a windows expert so I can't tell you how to get around this bug.

The timing seems right for Media Player 9 to be causing the "invalid directory for saving files" problem. I think getting album information and having the graphics save to the Limewire "saving" directory may reset a switch in software. Or is it the "Manage my Licenses" setting in WMP 9? I'm not sure. Currently I have one folder for saving and one for sharing and playing, and I'm not getting the problem (knock on wood). If someone else has experimented with the different settings and permutations of WMP it would be good to know. Keeping WMP from playing any of the files in my "saving" folder is a simple enough workaround for now. Thanks for your suggestion, trap_jaw.
