poor playback quality
 

Need a bit of help here. My song playback quality has become poor. Even the 4 star reviews. The problem is with gaps in the songs when they playback. Video works great. Anyone got an idea how to fix? Or id this indicitive of 2.5.5 ??

I run windows ME, 800 Mhz processor on a Gateway system. I connect with a SB4101 Motorola Cable Modem @ moderate speeds for a cable modem. My provider is Charter communication.

I have Windows Media Player, Real One, Quick Time, & the provided media player with Lime Wire.

The problem seems to happen on all players. I get the best quality playback if I defrag after downloading. This causes me concerns that it is my system and a file placement issue. I have progressed with Lime Wire from the original version to just today upgrading to v2.5.5.

Any ideas ??

Just as a side note i downloaded with v2.5.5, same problem. gaps in the song playback. hard to describe, not a pause but more like a scratch in a record would sound. (if you remember the vinyl days ..lol).

Frustrating because this is a new development. I have had great luck in the past ........

The four star reviews aren't four star reviews.

The number of stars is a rough indication of how easily you are likely to be able to get the file. One star is something like a modem user with no available upload slots, while four star is a broadband user with free upload slots. Stars provide no guarantee of playback quality.

Unfortunately, many people do a really bad job of ripping music - and others quite happily propogate the bad tracks once they've downloaded them.

So there is a fairly high chance that the tracks are corrupt. Your previous good quality may be done to luck. (The fault you describe sounds typical of a poorly ripped track).

If tracks you have downloade previously still play fine, then you can be confident that the problem lies with the new tracks you've downloaded.

If there is a problem with previously okay tracks then you need to take a careful look at what has changed on your system.

Try downloading winamp from www.winamp.com - this has excellent playback quality with little system overhead - so should help you decide whether it is your system of the tracks which are at fault.

Advice taken. As far as past track qualities, they are solid. I believe your theory is sound ... downloaded crappy files. Thanks again ....!!!!

WOW !!!!! ... i just downloaded and played around with winamp. Very cool. I noticied it is compatable with all formats. Do I still need all those other media players / viewers on my system or can I purge them ??

p.s. ... the playback is bettter with Winamp .. still not perfect, this is consistant with your advise though .... crappy tracks.

Winamp will play all the audio formats that I know about*. It doesn't play video - so you still need your video players.

*Actually I'm not sure it will play all streaming media from the web. RealMedia work really hard to prevent anything but their own players from playing their proprietry formats.

Also, since you say you're using LW 2.5.5, I would recommend taking advantage of the Bitzi web lookup feature. You can use it to see if anyone else experienced problems with a file you're interested in. While you are there, download and install their Bitcollider (umm... I think it's called the same thing in Windows, that's what it is called in Linux) Then, when you download a file, you can make your own judgements on it to help other users.
