 I am not sure about your exact problem but I had some "screen flashing" issues with 2.7.3. and XP. Mine occurred during searchs that were returning a lot of hits and my mouse was moving at the same time. I think it would be worth your effort to upgrade to 2.79 and see if it corrects the issue.
