OK I Give Up, need some advice please

I've been using Limewire for about 3 months. About two weeks ago, it started to not connect when clicking on the icon either on the desktop or start menu. It just kept freezing during startup. I have uninstalled it several times, to the point of manually deleting all registry entries and reinstalling it. It then works only the one time after installation but after I shut it down, it will freeze again on startup. I've tried restarting and killing the app. I do enjoy the program. Would you have any suggestions? Thank you

On 2/6/01 Rev 2.1 was released. Another should be released yesterday, today or tomarrow. What rev are you running. Have you tried on a fresh start JUST running limewire, stopinf and restarting. You didn't per chance install a firewall?

Hi:
I'm using v1.2b. Where can I get v2.1. On the Limewire website, when I download from windows, it always gives me v1.2b. I previously had a firewall installed. I don't think that it affected Limewire as it hasn't for the past few months. I'm not too sure what you mean by just running Limewire and the .inf file? Do you mean close down all running programs etc. and just open the limewire .exe and .inf files?
Thank you
Steve

Limewire home page
http://www.limewire.com/index.htm

That was a typo meant to try runing on a clean start just Limewire, you say that would work, then stop limewire and try restarting limewire. Maybe something else that you run is causing the problem. This would answer that question.

PS I am running a Mac so these are from a non PPC user. Anybody else junp in and help.

Hi:
I've continued to try and keep using Limewire. It just refuses to connect a second time unless I download it again. It always connect right after downloading and installing. I've turned off everything, anti-virus,firewall, all running programs, anything in start-up again and again. I've tried the new version and it does the same thing. Does anyone have an answer? I very much enjoy Limewire, and really would like to keep using it.

I have the exact same problem. I can only run Limewire once after installing. I have to re-install after I shut down Limewire to get it to run again. I guess I need some help too. I am running 1.3 Win98 Athlon 1.1 Zonealarm cable modem. Can anyone help????

maxverve March 23rd, 2001 07:43 PM

Hi elmiket: I noticed your running Zone Alarm. I'm using Norton Internet Security, so it's probably not the firewalls; i'm also using win98se and have cable- I noticed in one of the articles lightstone suggested to read, that if your IP is masked then perhaps Limewire may not install properly. Does any one know more about this?

I've been having a similar problem. Just downloaded the newest version today -- worked great until I shut down my computer. Then it demanded a new Java VM -- fine, did it. Now it won't find anything, and the widows themselved keep becoming blank -- so that I can't even see the buttons unless I blindly click on one of them, at which time it becomes visible.

DoctorTodd March 24th, 2001 12:44 PM

I deleted and reloaded it, and works fine again -- but if the other message string posts hold true, it will work only the first time after you reload it, meaning you have to delete it and reinstall it EVERY time you want to use it. Must be a BUG -- and a very inconvenient one.

maxverve March 24th, 2001 10:18 PM

DoctorTodd Yes, it is extremely inconvenient; however that's what I have to do to get it to work.
Are you using win98? Did you use Add/Remove programs to uninstall? And when it uninstalled, was there anything you had to manually uninstall? If you have the time could you let me know the steps you took? It's probably a long shot but I might be overlooking something? Does anyone know if the Limewire people are aware of this and are they coming out with a patch to fix it?

Is anybody of you running Limewire via SocksCap? V1.2 worked fine on my machine (Win98SE), even when I didn't use the "Force IP" option, but V1.3 only works if I run it for the first time OR without SocksCap (I can do this for troubleshooting, although I really >should< use the SocksProxy)... When trying to connect via SocksCap ZoneAlarm only asks whether it should allow the program to connect to the internet, but not if it may run as a server. So my theory is that Limewire1.3 tries to connect to a server, waits for an answer and then quits for some strange reason. But why? Because it can't get any reply?
Reinstalled V1.2 and it seems to work OK... (TIP: Always keep copies of your old installation files and change the name so that you can see which version it belongs to!)

elmiket March 28th, 2001 06:03 PM

Well, still don't have it working every time but have a little more info.

1)it is not neccessary to uninstall Limewire before reinstalling it.

2)once you have installed Limewire 1.3 it is possible to correct this problem by going back to version 1.2. Just make sure in this case to uninstall 1.3 first...

just my 2 cents.....

good luck

I wrote a really long answer to the problem addressed in this thread, but unfortunately I left one field blank that was required and when using my back button, the entire message was deleted. I am not going to retype the entire post, but I believe that the problem here is a firewall issue. First off, if you are not using ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro as your firewall, then you need to run, run, run to www.zonelabs.com and download it. ZoneAlarm is free. It is the best application firewall you can get, and it is FREE! If you don't believe me, go to www.grc.com and read until your heart wrenches at how vunerable you are using an opposing firewall. If any of you have additional firewall questions, or would like me to rewrite my looooong post that was erased, e-Mail me at trajik210@lycos.com

Thanks,

IMHO, it's not a firewall problem. I've tried several different firewalls, icluding Zone Alarm, Norton and no firewall and get the same results. Limewire only loads once, then I have to download it again. This only started about 3 months into using it, now it won't work at all.

And LIme wire people; I've sent e-mails and asked for help.Does this company not respond to help people out?

I've gotten this hang/freeze thing going on as well, and as with others, it was okay for a while, and then this started happening when no other changes had been made to the system, or the firewall. Uninstall/reinstall has been no help (not even the 'run once then crash' kind of help) installing the recommended Sun Java 1.4 (I had 1.3 before) had no effect, either. I can't figure anything out.

I'm using Windows 2000.
