Yikes! I'm glad I'm not having this problem. Why don't you two give us more info to go on, such as operating system, client, internet provider, ect...?

beak July 5th, 2001 06:16 PM

I am having a similar problem but not quite as extreme.I receive the illegal operation message very frequently when trying to open image and video files after they seem to successfully download.Thank god it is not to the extreme of constantly getting booted-I think I would have been frustrated to the point of removing the program by now.The bad news is I have posted twice asking for help and have received zero replies. The program is still very useful for audio files which I have no problem with.I also had alot of problems downloading limewire. As many I was looking for an alternitive to Napster.I was persistant and after several days and many attempts I was successful.I think in concept Limewire is a excellent site, but after reviewing all the posts it is obvious it has many problems and bugs that are going unanswered.I know I have been of no help but you are not alone. There are strength in numbers, maybe when they realize the number of people having a similar problem and that it is not an isolated case someone will be able to give us an answer.
Until then-Good luck!!!

i get booted for illegal operation too

Last few days, I am booted every few minutes for illegal operation. Nothing has changed on my computer. I am running Windows ME. Cable modem. Any ideas?

pab-low July 5th, 2001 08:28 PM

illegal operation too

I'm not sure what is going on either. I have been using Limewire for about 2 months and everything was going fine until these last couple of days. All of a sudden I'm getting 'Limewire has caused an illegal operation in 'unknown'... if this persists try restarting your computer... I also have Windows ME and a cable modem. I can't keep a connection for more than 5 min. Can anyone shed some light?

Unregistered July 5th, 2001 08:39 PM

I'm having the same trouble with LimeWire lately - crashing with illegal operation errors after a few minutes. What gives?!

Unregistered July 5th, 2001 09:54 PM

I can't use LimeWire anymore (illegal operation error) which means I get to have fun blocking all the LimeWire users. Nasty world we live in...

Unregistered July 6th, 2001 04:33 AM

Wow, you guys dug down deep for that "Illegal operation". You may want to try clicking on that "details" button in the future - especially if you want any help. You might as well have been saying "I get an error". Very very vague, and really of no value to anyone trying to help you with your problem.

Well, I have an "illegal operation" as well. Here it is.

LIMEWIRE caused an invalid page fault in

illegal operation

I got the same thing. I use Limewire since the Napster thing and everything was OK. But I always got an 'illegal operation' during exiting the program. The last few days I get the following 'illegal operation' after just 20 seconds online, while the hosts are still trying to connect:

LIMEWIRE executed an invalid instruction in
module <unknown> at 0000:00000075.

Any ideas?

Illegal

I get the same error using 1.4b. This is why I tryed 1.5 which as we know has its own problems. Now I have no Limewire because they both don't work. After the 1.5 trouble I uninstalled it and reinstalled 1.4b but that was no help.
Using Win98 SE on 1GHz Athlon/Tbird 512MB Ram.

Later ;)

Maybe some of us don't have a DETAILS button option to click on when this nasty error surfaces.

I think I have a solution

--
I think I have a solution for the NEWDOTNET.dll error. Newdotnet, or New.net, rather, is a spying program installed infamously by Bearshare, plus lots of others. To get rid of it safely, including the dll, get ad-aware. Something that isn't there can't give you an error, I guess. An added bonus is you'll also get all the other spyware of your system, too. Please tell me ASAP if this works or not.

 Kirby

P.S.=Remember it will take two ad-aware passes to remove all of the stuff.

Unregistered July 6th, 2001 10:39 AM

Kirby, this has nothing at all to do with spyware.

Kirby July 6th, 2001 11:06 AM

Yes, I know. It has mostly nothing to do with spyware. But the spyware is unintentionally causing errors. If the spyware isn't there, then it can't cause errors. Just try my idea and tell me if it works.

IT WORKS...

I just did it and now I've been runnng to 20 minutes straight with no errors....

I used to get the illegal operation problem 2 or 3 minutes after opening Limewire.

crohrs July 6th, 2001 12:50 PM

One more thing...

How many folks with the crashing Win98 problem have installed BearShare with the the new.net software? (Installing new.net without BearShare counts too.) This seems to cause problems with LimeWire. The fix is easy; remove new.net a la Kirby's post!

Christopher or Kirby..
Help!! I like your idea about removing new.net...but where on my hard drive is it located? I already uninstalled BearShare...but I'm still getting the same errors as everyone else. Where is it located so I can delete it?

crohrs July 6th, 2001 01:43 PM

I think it's safest to use the 'Add/Remove Software' option from the Windows Control Panel. If that doesn't work, I would try downloading 'ad-aware' as suggested by Kirby.

crohrs July 6th, 2001 01:49 PM

We need your help

LimeWire needs your help here. We have not yet reproduced the 'illegal operation' problem on our machines. Does anyone get this after uninstalling new.net?

Unregistered July 6th, 2001 02:28 PM

Kirby and Christopher....
YOU GUYS ARE STUDS!
I was getting booted from LimeWire every 5 minutes like everyone else on this thread. I took your advice and uninstalled BearShare...then went into Add/Delete programs in Windows Control Panel and deleted the NEWDOTNET program. Been running Limewire for 30 minutes now...NO MORE ERROR MESSAGES. I didnt even have to use ad-aware...but thanx for that info too.thanx again.

Another unreg July 6th, 2001 03:21 PM

Kirby,

Don't care what others say, your suggestion worked for me!

Remove the adware (especially the one installed by bearshare, and limewire works perfectly....

Thanks again!

Unregistered July 6th, 2001 08:12 PM

Kirby! I was the one that said spyware (if indeed that's what it was) had nothing to do with it and boy is my face red! My version of Ad-Aware didn't detect it, but sure as hell, there it was. After removing it through the control panel, LimeWire works fine now.

I don't recall installing this program! Where did it come from?

My most sincere and humble apologies to you, Kirby - and thanks!

pab-low July 6th, 2001 09:45 PM

Limewire is up and running perfectly!!

Thank you sooo much Kirby!!! I have been so frustrated with this that I lost all my music in the process of figuring out what to do. Whoever you are you have been a great help. Thank again! -pab-low

Kirby July 7th, 2001 08:53 AM

It probably got installed secretly by some other program's installation.

Thanks to everyone

Guys, I just got a new system unfortunately with WinME...boy has it been bugging me....with all sorts of sick crazy errors.

I couldnt get limewire to run for more than a few seconds before crashing....just went through all your messages and uninstalled New.net....

Cool! Thanks. Kirby here deserves a BIG pat on the back.

illegal operation

Praise Be To Allah!!!!!!

At first Limewire worked great, but an error message "limewire has caused an illegal...." popped up every time I closed it. Then it happened after about 1 minute of being logged on. I used Kirby's idea about deleting the new.net using ad-aware.

I've been logged on for about an hour now with no probs.

Kirby, I don't know how you came up with your solution, but thanks for the info.

Unregistered July 8th, 2001 11:38 PM

"Limewire has caused an illegal...."

Kirby - I took your advice and used the "Add/Delete Programs" function to delete the "NEW.NET.APPLICATIONS" --- now Limewire operates perfactly. Thanks very much for the advice!!

Unregistered July 9th, 2001 11:26 AM
