burning dvd-r's

Being new to this im struggling a bit, having downloaded movies in various file types i can watch them on my pc but when i burn them to dvd-r's my other dvd players in the house will not play them,do i have to convert the files to something else in order to watch them on the other players and if so, which software should i use.......... Ive tried avi and mpeg formats but still no luck when burning straight to disks, they just wont play but play fine on the pc..........im going bald from scatching my head too much.
Any help would be very much appreciated

Tc Tortuss,

I am not sure what program you are using to burn DVD's. Also you said you were burning -R. Are you sure your DVD player will play -R?

I use a Sony DVD burner and burn with Nero 6. I can choose either -R or +R when I burn. My DVD will play either but some machines will not.
