Win XP and Limewire 1.6b

Forced to try 1.6b. However, upon download and install, it does not work! Looking for a file in the Java directory that is not there. Is this just an XP problem?

I think 1.6c solves this problem

I removed/uninstalled 1.6b and installed 1.6c.

The installation is improved, but when I click on the desktop icon, I get a small white box followed by a larger window marked "LimeWire: Running the Gnutella Network". Except for the title, the window is blank.

This is where it stays...forever...or at least until I CAD out and kill it.

Is there something else that I should be doing?

I'm running P3-500, WIN98SE.

Screen of Death with v1.6b on XP RC-1

The moment after LimeWire appears, my PC crashes hard. I'm running Windows XP RC-1. I'll try the Beta version (v1.6c) and see how that works.

P.S. Maybe Java related? When I first installed v1.6b, the installation hung during the Java portion of the install, and I had to restart it. (I rebooted before the re-installation).

We have not done any testing with LimeWire and Windows XP. As far as I know, the Windows version of Java from Sun is also completely untested with Windows XP, although you may be able to get it to work.

Maybe RC-2 will help... Or Java install?

I'll be installing XP RC-2 this week, so I'll let ya know if that helps. I'm going to try LimeWire v1.6c with RC-1 first, though.

Do you think installing Java 2 Runtime Environment - Standard Edition (including Java Plug-in v1.3.1), before installing LimeWire, would help?

Installing the JRE before installing LimeWire really should have no effect at all. The installation of the JRE from within LimeWire should be no different than the standalone install, as they both launch the same install process.

ZoneAlarm may be the culprit!

The Stop Screen Error I was getting was:

The problem seems to be caused by the following file:

vsdatant.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

However, initial testing seems to indicate that ZoneAlarm (a "FireWall" program) in conjunction with LimeWire may be causing the crashing! If I shut down ZoneAlarm before launching LimeWire, the system doesn't crash when LimeWire starts, although I think I need to experiment a bit more to be sure. I'll keep you posted.
