Just upgraded to WinXP, Prog locks up entire pc after 30 secs I'm running LimeWire Pro for windows on a Wireless 802.11B 11mbps connection, and have for about a month now. I just upgraded to Windows XP, and everything is just fine except two of my programs, one of which is LimeWire, locks up after about 30 seconds of being open. The other is DC++ v0.401, if that helps. My entire pc becomes locked, and I am forced to do a hard reset to get my pc running again. I have tried uninstalling, then reinstalling the program, however, this does not stop the problem. Could this be a problem with Java? Is there a patch I must download? Your help would be greatly appreciated. |
I have one problem, The first thing I would do is make sure the XP firewall is truned off. Go to Control Panel, select Network Connections, highlight your connection, select "Change Settings of This Connection, select the advanced tab, uncheck "Protect My Computer". Reboot and try your connection. Good Luck, Norm |
I have that unchecked already, because I do file sharing over AIM, and other things that require my computer "unprotected". Thanks for your help though. |
I have one problem, Try this - Go to Control Panel, open Java, select the browser tab and uncheck Netscape and IE. Reboot and try it. If that doesn't work then I think it would be worthwhile to uninstall and reinstall Java. Good Luck Norm |
OK, Java reinstalled, everything unchecked in the Browser Tab, I downloaded JRE v. 1.4.2_05, and the installation went smoothly, and just as I started up LimeWire, the same problem arose. I did uninstall the previous JRE first. Is there anything else that could be the problem? Keep in mind that DC++ does this to me also. TUIA. |
Sorry Norm just passing thru (I'm a mac person not a win person). Is there a chance that LW & DC++ v0.401 clash? It may even be that DC++ leaves your system a touch unstable. Have you checked with any forums or FAQ's for DC++? |
Lord of the Rings, Hi, good point. Jump in with any ideas. I am not familiar with DC++ but I suspected a common issue both DC++ and Limewire were encountering. That made me think JAVA. Uninstalling and reinstalling Java can be tricky. Sometimes you have to deal with the registry and Java itself can be tricky. I run two versions - one for Limewire & one for everything else. I run Java 1.3.1_04 for Limewire simply because I have had the least problems with it. I have one problem, sorry, I wish I could be more help. Norm |
Thank you both, I appreciate your thoughfulness. I'm fairly sure that DC++ doesn't run off of the Java platform. Another little piece of info you guys should know...when the computer locks, the HD led light on my PC case is constantly lit. Can one of you guys link me to any patches for LimeWire, just in case I need one? |
Well personally it doesn't sound like a LW issue morso than a clash of softwares or problem with your DC++. There's no patch I'm aware of other than trying another version such as the beta v.4.1.5. If the beta has the same effect. I'd gamble on the problem stemming from your DC++! Freezing is a severe problem & stinks of incompatibility with something. There's definitely something there causing the clash with either your system/DC++/DC++ causing problems with other things such as your sys & LW & possibly other things. A really good quality 3rd party utility should be able to tell you what app is in the wrong. I'd hate to suggest any for pc (the 1st one that comes to mind for me doesn't work well on mac. ie: Conflict Catcher) I hate the app, but on pc windows I'm sure it does a sufficient job when u only have one os. I should add to that that Conflict Catcher was designed for windows use (unfortunately its adaption to mac os forgot to take some things into consideration.) This IS what u need to do. U definitely have something that's clashing. Whether u use Conflict Catcher or another utility make sure u run a test for file compatibilities & conflicts! I insist!!! |
I guess that there's a very slight possibility that there is a hardware problem with your HDD (based on light being left on) when it tries to access a program file shared between those two apps - have you tried a thorough checkdisk on all your disk drives? Si |
