Thumbs down Limewire impact on internet explorer

I use a fast cable connection, and had very comfortable surfspeed with internet explorer6, untill I installed LimeWire (which works very good). Now, my regular internet connection (let's say just googling) is incredibly slow and even sometimes comes to a stop. I'm not using both at the same time. I'm still in windows ME. Who can help me out??

For a Windows PC, protection software that should be rather common are:
Antivirus
Firewall
Adware removal
Spyware removal
(General malware removal)
Which of these have you got?

I would suggest the following: get a Firewall (there are decent free firewalls out there. Anybody care to give us a link to one?) and set it to block everything and anything. If it detects that something is trying to gain access to the net (except from IE) then there's probably some malware that spybot hasn't taken care of.
