Limewire won't run

I downloaded/installed Limewire 1.6 on my Me system. I have an "always on" cable connection. When I double-click the desktop icon, nothing happens. I right-click and pick "open"...still nothing. Can anyone help?

squiggy94 August 11th, 2001 07:06 PM

1.6d won't execute

I've got the same problem on Win98. Seems like JRE path is not happening:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

Help!

Unregistered August 11th, 2001 08:06 PM

LimeWire 1.6d for windows won't run for me either

me too!

-I reinstalled explorer 5.x
-cleared temp files
-made sure Ikernel.exe is not in memory
-uninstalled and reinstalled in various ways
-confirmed existance of Stdole32.tlb file
-Downloaded and ran DCom98.exe
-tried installers from other download sites
-Deleted the Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine folder and then reran the setup.

I suspect something is missing from the installer.

I click on the installer, the hour glass cursor appears then nothing.

I click on the installer, the hour glass cursor appears then nothing.
My system:
PII350
196 megs of ram
SCSI hard drive
win98 2nd edition with all possible updates

currently running "release ram" because I installed 98 this
month and it is lagging for reasons unknown to me.

TruStarwarrior August 11th, 2001 08:08 PM

Weird...

I am running Win 98 SE, and my shortcut target looks like this:

C:\WINDOWS\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

You might try changing your shortcut target. Right click the icon on your desktop, click properties, and you should be able to make any changes there. Hope this helps! :-)

P.S. Did LimeWire install JRE during installation? Or did you already have it?

sonny4243 August 11th, 2001 10:35 PM

test

fixed it by uninstalling old java runtime

afisk August 11th, 2001 10:41 PM

We are going to modify this behavior slightly again for our next release, but for now modifying the shortcut to point to where you actually have java installed should work fine.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

LimeWire 1.6b Wouldn't Run

After uninstalling LimeWire 1.4b and installing LimeWire 1.6d
(7 times) I noticed in the install/uninstall program box....that
there were 2 versions of Java 2 Runtime Environment.
I uninstalled the original version (1.2.1) and kept the 1.3.1 version.
LimeWire started right up!

This is on Windows 98.

Unregistered August 12th, 2001 06:27 AM

I installed Limewire 1.6d and get nothing when I click on the icon. I reinstalled it 4 times ...still nothing. If I install and use the old version all is working well. So, what's wrong with the new version? How can I fix it? I have cable modem.

Unregistered August 12th, 2001 01:36 PM

TruStarwarrior was right

My shortcut pointed to:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

changing it to:

C:\WINDOWS\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

fixed the problem. Good catch Tru!

Thanks for the help. The new path did the trick and everything's now working.

Mary985 August 12th, 2001 11:07 PM

Great Fix!

:p Thanks TruStarwarrior, the new path is just the advice I needed. Everything is working great now. I am also running Windows 98 SE.

TruStarwarrior August 12th, 2001 11:42 PM

Anytime, guys! :-)

Windows 95

The standard installation will not work for windows 95 machines.

In order for LimeWire 1.6d to run on my machine I had to change the shortcut to the following.

"C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\bin\javaw.exe" -cp . RunLime

It ran first try after that.

Unregistered August 19th, 2001 04:14 PM

thanx so much for the info! i just got limewire 1.6, and i couldnt get it to work! now it finally works! thanx all!

Unregistered August 20th, 2001 12:22 AM

mmm, mines still stuffed, im sorry but i just cant work out the shortcut, ive tried everything!!!

i have a c:\windows\jview.exe file, is this what i should be [pointing it to?

but it wont let me!!!

pls help

TruStarwarrior August 20th, 2001 01:04 AM

The two paths that have been shown to be acceptable so far are:

C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\bin\javaw.exe" -cp . RunLime

C:\WINDOWS\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

Do you have Java2 installed? Perform a search (Start > Find > Files or Folders) for javaw.exe. If you don't have it anywhere, you will need to download and install it from

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/

or use the LimeWire installer to install it for you.

trevor68 August 20th, 2001 01:19 AM

ok, i d/l the java from sun, now i have two javaw.exe files, in both locations, windows and program files, but neither works!

when i enter the address inthe "start in" window, it just says invalid shortcut???

also the "target" box says - cp.RunLime, but i dont have any such file?

the file in 1.6d folder is RunLime.class???

trevor68 August 20th, 2001 01:35 AM

ok, i need two addresses
pls tell me what goes in the "target" box, and what goes in the
"start in" box, sorry, i know im slow, but im unacustomed to creating shortcuts manually!!!

thanks for your time!

oh, what happens if i install java 1.3.1, on top of the working java i had??

cos i got the shortcut to say "unable to start the virtual machine", now, hey at least its a different message!!!:D

TanRanger August 20th, 2001 09:53 AM

Goto java.sun.com and download their JRE2 1.3.1
Goto www.limewire.com and download LimeWire1.6d.

UNinstall your old JRE(s).
UNinstall LimeWire (all copies if more than one exists).

Install official sun JRE2 1.3.1
Install LimeWire 1.6d

The above solved half a dozen problems for me.

TruStarwarrior August 20th, 2001 03:02 PM

To answer your question, Trevor......

Target: C:\WINDOWS\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

Start in: "C:\Program Files\LimeWire 1.6d"

Is it working?

Unregistered August 21st, 2001 01:19 AM

yes!!!!!, thankyou very much!!!!!!

mmm, now i keep getting an error message saying to set my incoming listening port???

i left it set at 6346, should i try another port??

TruStarwarrior August 21st, 2001 03:06 AM

This is not even funny, but I am chuckling anyways... All this hassle for what? An error message? :-)

Can you connect to the network at all? If so, there isn't anything to be overly concerned about- UNLESS the error changes to something different.

If you are not able to connect to the network at all (make sure first), then... congratulations! Your system doesn't like the new java inplementation LimeWire uses, and now you have to download an alternate version! Aren't you excited?! [Groaning from reader. "Not another download."] I'm sorry you're having to go through so much just to get LimeWire running. What a hassle!

Try this one out.

http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWire16d118.exe

The LimeWire team released it for people who are having connection problems.

miniudo August 21st, 2001 11:29 AM

not my fault!!

I couldn't run Limewire, either!! My BF got mad at me saying I screwed the computer...well, I'm glad to be able to prove I didn't!

I uninstalled both Limewire (1.6b) and Java Runtime (also made sure all the files were gone by using Windows Explore), and downloaded Limewire and Java Runtime (from Sun HP). Installed Runtime first, then Limewire. Well, then, it worked finally!

It seems to me that we just have to keep trying...untill it works!

I'm using English WinMe and Japanese WinMe with 2 different HDs (dual boot with "Boot Magic"), and this makes installing or uninstalling very complicated sometimes. And, of course, if anything wrong happens to the computer, that must be my fault! Non sense! I'm really happy to have come here and got some help for this "common problem" which everybody has experienced. I greatly appreciated!

Good luck, guys. Keep looking for some help and keep trying! You'll get there for sure.

LvnDaSwtAngl247 August 31st, 2001 07:38 AM

Thank you trustarwarrior that TARGET worked and now my limewire is running!!!!!:D

Unregistered August 31st, 2001 12:28 PM

AAAAAAAARGGGH!!!!

I've tried all of this, none of it works! I don't even have a c:\program files\javasoft folder. When i tried to uninstall it, it said it was missing a file and cancelled. Re-installing didn't work, and my javaw.exe was never in the windows/system directory, it was always in windows/ . Please help!!!!

TruStarwarrior August 31st, 2001 02:41 PM

On a Win 98 machine, javaw.exe should be in C:\WINDOWS. Did you try changing the shortcut target?

bkosh84 August 31st, 2001 04:35 PM

Hi,

Im a new user of Limewire and I have tried EVERYTHING on this post and nothing is working?? I can't figure out what is going on....... Can someone help???

TruStarwarrior August 31st, 2001 05:23 PM

Please explain when and where the problem occurs. Does the software install? Does it launch? Does it connect? Are you behind a firewall? Are you accessing the internet in a college dorm or similar location?

Unregistered August 31st, 2001 06:02 PM

sorry for lack of info..... It installs fine, it is when i click on the icon, it loads the splash screen and then nothing... I am at home on a Gateway computer. I have tried ALL of the other targets, and it still dont work.......

Unregistered August 31st, 2001 06:03 PM

bkosh84 August 31st, 2001 06:04 PM

oops, those last two Unregistered user posts are mine :P

TruStarwarrior August 31st, 2001 06:13 PM

If this none of these versions work, then I guess LimeWire sucks. It must hate your computer. Sorry. :-(

bkosh84 August 31st, 2001 06:47 PM

TruStarwarrior, you are a savior! The 118 download works, thx man! :) what is the difference of the 118 and the current one? is it the icon missing down in the Start bar???

Limewire 1.6d Shortcut Fix

Upon installing Limewire 1.6d and clicking on the shortcut, the application failed to load (or do anything for that matter).

Originally my shortcut was pointed to the following path:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

I was able to get Limewire to load by changing it to the following path:

C:\WINDOWS\javaw.exe -cp . RunLime

It now works like a champ! I have no idea why the shortcut set up by the installer points to the wrong path... :-(

Anyway, this fix works!

<< Kenn >>

TruStarwarrior August 31st, 2001 10:26 PM

Alternate version 118 uses the old version of Java (1.1.8) as opposed to the newer one (1.3.1). When LimeWire migrated to the newer Java, an incompatability arose that should be fixed in future releases.

gbildson September 1st, 2001 06:47 PM

I woulldn't be surprised if the JRE didn't install. You might want to run the 1.6d installer again or go get the JRE installer directly from Sun:

Java 2

I had the same problem that Limewire wouldnt start when I click on the Icon. I checked in my Add/remove Programs box for the "old" Java 2 runtime Environment 1.2.1 or whatever but I didnt even find the 1.3.1 one. The only one that I had installed was the 1.3.0 one. So i gouess you just wanna make sure that you have the newest version installed (available at http://java.sun.com/Download5). It worked for me
