LW slows my system to a c r a w l

Hey y'all,

When first start LW I have good connection and download speeds in both LW and other apps. However, after about 5-15 minutes my connection speeds and download speeds slow to a crawl.

For example, LW will start off downloading several items at a total of 50-60K and then drift down to about 5-8K total DL speed.

If I start LW and then immediately run OE, I get my e-mail okay. But if I wait 15 minutes, most of my accounts will time out and I won't get my e-mail.

Same thing for surfing. If I run IE immediately after starting LW, it is okay. But after 15 minutes or so, I can't connect to CNN, MSN or even to this site.

System

AMD 2000
1G ram
80G HD, 40G free
WinXP Pro SP2 All patches (firewall disabled)
Java 1.4.2.05
800k +/-DSL
LW 4.0.8
McAffe AV up to date
ZA Pro up to date
Spybot up to date
Ad Aware up to date
Recent scans - clear

Any ideas??

TIA,

RD

I not sure what you mean by (1 G of ram)
are you sure its not 128,256,or 512

but it sound like you have tons of software running in the background and are you using limewire free or pro its a big difference

I would start by start/run/type msconfig/startup tab/disable all/apply/ok/restart/ defrag your hardrive/IE/tools/Internet options/advanced/restore defaults......

thats a good start

then do a full scan at www.pcpitstop.com or something

This is just one approach..............good luck

It is 1 Gigabyte, or 1,024 megabytes of RAM . . . in other words . . . plenty ;)

Windows is a multi-tasking OS. If LW cannot play nice with other apps, then it is useless to me. I'm running LW Pro. I was using Shareazaa before I bought LW Pro and I could surf the internet, instant message and get my e-mail, even play Everquest while Shareazaa was running.

I think it is partially a connection sharing issue (LW hogs the connection) but I don't know how to fix it. I browsed through the settings of LW, but I couldn't find any way of limiting bandwith use that was very discrete. (There were four settings, if i remember right, and the next setting lower than my connect speed was dial-up speed. Ugh Shareazaa has a setting where you can tell it what percentage of your bandwidth to use.)

As I said, if LW cannot play nice in a multi-tasking environment, then it is not the correct app for me. I'll try it for trouble shooting, but it really isn't an option for a permanent solution.

defrag your hardrive/
done regularly

I might try this, if I can remember what I've changed that I'll want to change back, and if I can think of why it would help. I don't think that it will have any effect because everything starts out okay and then gets worse.

Thanks for your response and ideas. ;)

If LW is hogging your connections, try limiting the upload bandwidth. See Murasame's suggestions in http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=27036

I've got a very similiar system to RastaDevil's, and am having the same situation. I had the same situation with KazaaLite (which I no longer use), but not with Morpheous. Overall, I prefer LW, but I believe there is a speed problem, over time.

Also, I'm in agreement w/ RD that we shouldn't have to reconfigure our systems.

Try the latest beta.

Hmmmm, should I trade in what is supposed to be a finished, working version for a version whose sole purpose is have us find it's flaws in the hopes of solving a problem?

There's a Pro version of LW beta 4.1.7 I use it & am very happy with it. There's lots of improvements. View them here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=1 It was only a suggestion.

windows is shipped as a one-size-fits-all os, so what that means is that theres a load of services you probably dont need going on by default-- go to blackviper.com and look at what services you can safely disable on your system. for example the print spooler service on mine is off unless i turn it on so i can print- that saves me 3mb of ram for other stuff to use- plus all the crap thats added to the startup sequence is usually unneeded--- search for mike lin's site- he has a startup control panel thing that makes it easy to manage it all

There are many purposes of a beta. One of them is to help us find bugs. Just one. The others are mainly more features for you.

Touche'

My apologies!

Thanks for all of your responses.

I did Murasame's tweaks and that sped up LW a lot and helped with my problem a little. I bosted the wait time for checking mail and that helped me get my mail better.

However, LW still hogs the connection occasionally, but not as often or as consistently as before.

If I come up with any more hints/info I'll post it.

Thanks again,

RD
