Want to download movies. Plz help!!!

Hello there,

Here's hoping you can help me and put a stop to the divorce proceedings ;) :p

My B/F has been trying to d/load a movie (not sure if I'm allowed to say what, so I won't)

Anyway I've been having a look on the forum I've also tried help.

What I need to know is what exactly am I looking for? (I don't mean which movie.....lol...) I mean how big should it be and if it does start connecting how long will it take, I'm using DSL (on one of the things he tried to d/load it said 1:03:06:37 - the numbers were keep changing and the d/load speed kept going to 0 kb's or something.

What does WMV, AVI, and MPG mean??

I saw a post somewhere which said if you don't share, some others won't share with u, even if you see their stuff in the results. We do share about 30 odd files, happen this isnt enough.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Lindy x :)

Try to downld from multiple sources if you can. They're the search results that have numbers under the # column.

It depends on what you want to do with the movie. Watch it on computer, connect your computer to TV or burn the movie to CD or DVD. For watching on computer probably any format is OK. For burning to disk either avi, mpg/mpeg are the best.
(WMV=Windows Media Video, AVI=Audio Video Interleave which is a commonly used format & comes in different variations, MPEG/MPG=Mpeg; Mpeg type 1 is used for VCD, MPeg2 for SVCD & DVD. There's also MPeg4/DivX which may be camouflaged as an avi file.)

Most decent quality movies have been reduced to CD size or even split into parts for CD's. So you're looking at over 500 MB for a reasonable quality movie to burn & watch on TV. Ignore those that are a small size. Many of those are spam - advertisements but they show up in searches duplicating your search.

The figure 1 at the beginning of that how much time represents 24 hours or one day. The next 2 no.'s = hours, etc.

If you're uploading it's certainly easier to get better results. It helps you to connect to many other people. Sharing over 30 is quite ok. Over 50 might be a bit better.

Doing another search for the topic can help to find more sources. Remember there's people who go on/offline continuously so this can affect search & downld results.

Here's some hints if you haven't seen them before: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

Thankyou

Many thanks again,

I really appreciate the time you took to reply.

I will be having a look at the links b4 my B/F gets back from Karate (Hah, he doesn't scare me.....lol..... :p to him........)

I don't know that much about computers, but he knows even less (is that possible?? )
He's blaming not being able to get music on us getting WinXP. (He can get music)
I had to install LW again and it was a newer version too.
It had changed that's why I asked a while back about saving stuff.

Blimey, sorry for waffling on...lol...
Thanks again for all your help

Regards, Lindy x

IP check: http://www.whatismyip.com/

Speed Tests: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

Most will give similar results but they will also give you a better idea by doing more than one test. :)

Ahem*, hey sorry to bother you again, but when you goto filter/ hosts and put the numbers 192.168.*.* AND 10.*.*.* in. Is that exactly how u do it or do u put the whole lotta numbers that are included in the filters bit and do you need " " around them  <---(thick more like)

And this bit underlined, is it in the right order?? Cos I'm not sure what u mean (sorry)

I make this suggestion to filter out all the host who have incorrectly forwarded their private IP address on the network. These IP addresses are NOT routable and you will NOT be able to connect and download content from these hosts so ignore results from these guys. if

4. Go to tools/options/filters/keywords Filter out search results containing !!!
<----what are the 3 exclamation marks for??

Most likely viruses or porn files emulating your search queries.

OK, I am having problems and I am a bit of a novice, so if anyone can help I would be most grateful. I can download fine and all seems well then I go to library and cannot open or view anything, it either comes up with unknown error with audio file.

If I have picked modem speed, does this mean I can only download modem speed files?

I have just managed to download an audio file for modem, but cannot get others can anyone help?

Thankyou

Terri

terri2403: This will give you a good idea about connection type settings: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...034#post114034

You can downld any speed files no matter what - but make sure you share files. Some people filter out those that share less than a certain no. of files so although they'll show up in your search results you won't be able to downld from them if you're sharing less than their prescribed no. of files.

As far as audio goes, keep in mind the riaa & T3 sources & also make a note of file size v's bit-rate: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28801

Here's some hints: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only!) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

Wahayy

Hello again Lord of the rings,
(I've just typed up a reply to your last post and I swear I sent it, but musn't have, sorry if it turns up somewhere....:D )

Anyway thanks for the tip on configuring LW, worked a treat. Managed to download a movie in about 6 hrs.

Thing is I couldn't play it cos of missing codecs (I know....lol....look on the forum) I did look on the forum and also used web help when I got the msg about codecs. In fact I've been to that many places I can't remember where I got Divx codec v5.2 from (this enabled me to get a picture but still no sound) now though I'm not getting the codec error msg so I'm not getting the web help. The movie was an avi thingy so could u gis a clue as to what codec may be missing??

Many thanks again,
Lindy xx
