Default What the hell????

Okay, this morning I tried running Limewire Pro 4.2.6 and all I saw was a pure grey screen with the limewire title at the top. I closed the program and tried again, same thing. Then I tried rebooting the computer and again got the same thing. I tried installing the latest version of java with no change. Then I decided to try reinstalling the program and am now encountering even more problems. The limewire website says the latest version is 4.2.6 but when I download and install it, it says it is version 4.4.1 and the language selection box pops up but it is pure grey with no text. Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong or what I should try to fix this?

Did you update your Java also? Java version 1.4.x OR version 1.5 (take the JRE)
Sometimes one version does better than the other depending on the person's particular set-up.

Yup, I've got Java version 1.5, tried reinstalling it a couple of times too.

The next two suggestions would be 1. to try deleting LW's preferences folder called .limewire (whilst LW is closed!) & found here:
Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
OR Windows 98 / ME: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents" (BUT make a note of all your LW settings 1st, b/c after you delete the LW prefs folder you'll need to reset them.)

2. Uninstall Java 1.5 & install 1.4.2 instead & see if that makes any difference. Some people have had problems with Java 1.5 & then when they used 1.4.2 things were fine.

How many incomplete & shared files do you have (approx)? How much ram?

A late suggestion would be to try the LW Beta 4.3.4 which is not much different but fixed some people's problems: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml

Well, I just uninstalled Java 1.5 and tried installing 1.4 but after selecting the default folder location I get a pop-up box asking if I want to create a new directory but there is nothing in the pop-up (no buttons or text), just a grey box. Then when I close that and try to cancel the installation another grey pop-up box opens up asking me if I want to exit. I end up having to close the installation with the windows task manager. What the hell is going on?

Sounds more like a computer issue. It might be a 'pain' but I suggest you restart the computer & defrag your HDD & do a system check.

hmmm just a thoght. Not sure but see if the instructions in this link help. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...512#post118512

I would also do as LotR suggested. Even if it doesn't resolve the problem your system will run much better.

Nope , nothing seems to be working. I have tried all your suggestions and it still won't work. What could be preventing Java from running properly? For some reason I get a solid grey box in any Java based program. I just tried enabling Java from the Control Panel and when the box opened up it was all grey with the "Java Control Panel" title at the top.

I would uninstall java and try the other version LotR put a link to in a previous post. For some it seems there systems work better with the earlier version.

I would also uninstall any other versions of java on your system if you have any.
