Default Fatal Error Problem

I get this from the Java and Limewire dialog box, I've tried re-installing, downloading 4.8.1 and installing, uninstalling then installing, but still the same error:

Uninstall completely (also delete the LW preferences directory:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
Now go to www.java.com and download the latest Java (I think it's best to uninstall and reinstall if you can). Then try the LW installer once again.

I've tried that, still no luck, after weeks of frustration and constant problems, I have decided that I dislike Limewire and have switched to Shareaza.

The Ford won't run to suit me and I ain't a mechanic so I bought a Chevy.
I have never had problems installing LimeWire on a properly maintained and properly programmed computer. Sorry. I work on computers as part of my business. A computer's worst enemy is it's operator. Have you done all the Windows updates and driver updates?? Have you run a scandisk, defrag, spyware/adware scan, and a virus scan?? Does your Firewall recognize LimeWire as an authorized program??

Trust me, I have done everything, this is actually the first problem I've had with it, and obviously, I do care otherwise I wouldn't be checking this topic. Limewire is good, I wish it hadn't been written in Java, but I've tried just about everything and it still doesn't work.

Hmmmm just a thought I know this may sound like a PITA, but here goes.

Uninstall LimeWire and Java. Open windows explorer and search for anything LimeWire and Java. If you find any thing delete it. Run a registry checker/cleaner. If you don't have one search(upper right) the forums for one. There are a few links to some that are decent.

After you have cleaned the registry shut down and restart the comp.

Then reinstall Java and LimeWire in that order.

I'm thinking something may have gotten messed up in your registry.

Like deacon72 mentioned a well maintained comp. is essential to proper operation of programs. I have messed up my registry in the past installing and unintsalling programs before. For some unknown reason not all the registry entries get removed that should have been. A registry cleaner has normally fixed these problems.

Best of luck

I'll give it a go, my computer is pretty well maintained, I've had it for about a month and I scan for viruses everyday.

Do you have anti-spyware/anti-adware software? If you do and did a scan prior to the appearance of the problem, then it could be that you deleted something that you shouldn't have with it.

But then surely the reinstallation would have fixed this problem?

No actually murasame has a good point.

If you did remove items from your registry that are used by LW and Java, It may be causing this problem.

You can do a restore to a time prior to the removal of any registry entry changes. This may fix this problem.

You can also try doing some of the repairs from your WinXP cd.
You will need to boot, start, your comp. from this cd.
