LIMEWIRE made my pc slow :(

hey, when you go to download Limewire from limewire.com is meant to redirect you to download.com?? ....I downloaded this and it worked fine... But after 2 days my computer started running very slow, and i found that my CPU was astranomically high... and that limewire was taking up most of it.... Did i download the official limewire pack or is it a conned version?........... I currently dont have Limewire and I`m missing it already ..

WHY does Limewire make my pc so slow.... Kazaa, Bearshare... and all the other **** ones dont work... but limewire did apart from making my pc like a snail.. :( :( :( :(

Would you provide the following information.

Computer type and CPU
Operating System and sp
HDD
RAM
Firewalls
LimeWire Version
Java Version
Connection type (Dialup,ADSL,DSL,Cable)
Moden type and model no.
Router type and model no.
Who is your Internet Service Provider

I believe I read here in the forums that was a valid re-direct.

Thank you

(well watever is installed with LW 4.8 i guess).. I have an ISDN connection .. dont know moden type or router... my internet service provider is Wanadoo...

:P

x3r0x March 29th, 2005 06:52 PM

!!!!!!!!!! i dont have limewire anymore!!!!!!!!! i got rid of it when i realised it made my pc much slower!!!

fabion March 29th, 2005 07:06 PM

You can find your java version in XP start>control panel>add or remove programs. It should be listed as J2SE runtime enviroment 5 update 2

I'm not sure what was causing the high CPU usage. I don't suffer that problem.

When was the last time you did any system maint. ie. disk defrag and disk cleanup? Might help to do that aslo.

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 03:04 AM

My Java version is 5.0, I havent defragmented the drive latelty cos it already has 43.9GB free, I done a disk cleanup not long ago and im doing it right now.

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 03:05 AM

ahh its update 1 not 2 aswell

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 03:10 AM

Hey, the high CPU usage... well i have like 53 processes without running any programs.. so maybe all them are casing this?

fabion March 30th, 2005 08:21 AM

Hmmm I just checked my Task Manager I have 54 processes running, and my CPU usage is appx. 2% - 17%.

I have an 80 gig hard drive, but in reality I only get about 72 gigs out of it. It normally has 30 gigs free, so I defrag it twice a week now. It makes the machine run quicker and more efficently.

It might be you have processes running in the back ground. ie Peer Guardian 2. Before I upgraded the previous version was constantly running the CPU at 47%. That was also before I upgraded the java to update 2. There might or might not be a relationship there.

It wouldn't hurt to update your java, and defrag your hard drive.

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 11:06 AM

ok thanks for that, I do have loads of processes that run in the backround ,Some of which i ended.

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 11:14 AM

I want to install limewire again, Anything else I can do make sure my pc doesnt go slow?. I read somewhere that even when you are not using limewire and have exited.. it, People can still download files from your computer. What can i do to stop this, Because i think this is one of the reasons my pc slows.

To my knowledge that doesn't happen. If LW is fully closed it is then unaccessible to others.

As far as reducing processes, there are processes that run that really aren't needed. I came across this http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/browse.php?l=0 some time back. I've come across others also but didn't make a note of them.

Ways to reduce LW's taxing on cpu: most recent Java; set all uploads & downlds to autoclear; close all LW windows you're not using at that time via the View>Show/Hide menu, eg: monitor window, etc.; disable Ultrapeer capabilities under Speed setting; reduce upld speed to about 70-80%; reduce upload slots to something practical; reduce downld speed to 80-90%; don't use the Resume button to continue all your incomplete files ... this will definitely tax LW, your cpu, & possibly your connection quality; don't downld too many files simultaneously; leave LW to settle before using - perhaps 20 - 30 mins.; share less files.

That's some ideas off-hand. The more incomplete files you have & the more shared files then the longer it takes for LW to settle down.

Some people breathe some fresh life into LW via deleting all incomplete files that are 0% for example. After opening they click on the very top of the Progress bar so that all files are arranged by % downlded. Then scroll down to & select 1st with 0% & then scroll down to last with 0% holding SHIFT key select it so all those at 0% are selected. Then press the Stop button. Then go to incomplete folder & arrange it by size & delete all those at 0 KB. This can apparently speed up opening LW & give it a bit more energy so to speak.

Thankyou!! thats a lot of help :) .. I think I`ll try Limewire again and take both your advice. Hmmm How do i get the latest Java?, The Java i got was whatever was with Limewire 4.8.

fabion March 30th, 2005 02:51 PM

In WinXP got to control panel>add or remove programs>J2SE runtime enviroment --- highlight then click on support --- it will list a link for updates.

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 03:22 PM

If I install it .. and it makes my pc slow .. Would system restore help recover it back to normal?. I`ve made a restore point.

fabion March 30th, 2005 03:39 PM

It should, but you should just have to remove or uninstall it.

x3r0x March 30th, 2005 04:52 PM

yay!, its working fine... I realised it takes up over 40,000k on memory!!! , so I dont have it running long. When I last had it, It ran fine for the first two days, And then made things slow, So I guess I`ll just wait. :)

fabion March 30th, 2005 05:37 PM

Great news. Yeah Java never was memory efficient, and still isn't.

Best of luck

Slow Running Limewire

AMD Athlon 64
2 GigMem
900 Mg HD
XP Pro SP2

I'm with you pal. (seems that) After upgrading to LW Pro v4.8, (silly me) Limewire upon loading immediately grabs 100% of CPU resources. I assure everyone that this happens with no other program (than usual background stuff) running, that all support programs are up-to-date and that auto Diskeeper keeps 4 HD's fairly unfragmented. First indication of problem was uncoordinated mouse movement. No need to expound on low CPU use by Shareaza etc. etc., eh?
Help from Limewire Please

x3r0x March 31st, 2005 12:01 PM

Hey, I also set windows for best performance which made my pc faster and i defragmented the drive, even though it did take 4 hours..

uhhhhh it runs fine but, every now and then my pc crashes :( dunno if this got anything to do with limewire though .. Also, when i go to log off my floppy disk drive rumbles like when you first boot up your pc, Only it goes on for like a minute, it definetely does not sound healthy.

zeroz06 March 31st, 2005 04:01 PM

I also had slowdown problems but only with 4.8.1 on the screen. If i minimized it, the pc would pick back up and run fine. I thought it could be my video card (nvida fx5500) or something, but i get the same response on my laptop (ati mobility). I'm running jre 5.2 on both machines.

fabion March 31st, 2005 04:13 PM

Hi zeroz06

There have been several problems with both display adapters you mentioned. With various fixes for each.

I suggest you search(upper right) for this. You will find numerous posts on this subject.

x3r0x April 1st, 2005 03:04 AM

If you havent already done it, I reccomend that you set limewire not to connect automatically as soon as you turn on your pc. This helped me to make sure everything was running smoothly before I opened LW 4.8.1. I have no problems unless I download a lot of things at once, If i run more then my pc either crashes or slows down and limewire starts running at like 50,000k.

Odd, I searched the forums for Nvidia, 5500, fx5500, nvida slowdown, fx5200, mobility.. nothing mentioning the problems alot of us appear to be having.

Limwire Slow Running - Solution??

As mentioned in an earlier post regarding LW (upon loading) taking up 100% pf CPU resources.
With nothing to lose, I reset LW options back to default. This meant that I had to set up LW options all over again.
Fortunately, I quickly found that by reducing the amount of files shared from my library, the % of CPU required by LW dropped to quite low amounts. (This was unforseen by me and quite a surprise) I found that when sharing about 4,500 files, (and yes, even after LW had been given lots of time to sort and load these files) CPU usage eventually stabalized at about 58% and stayed there.
When I reduced shared files to about 75, LW CPU usage stabalized at a mean of between 7 and 10% with the odd high spike, that I think is about right.
This is not good for the LW P2P community, but it works for me. I haven't attempted yet to calculate the point where amount of files shared actually pushes CPU usage up beyond acceptible limits.
I share over 5,000 files on Shareaza with no problems at all, so if my conclusions are correct, there must be a bug somewhere in LW Pro. Incidentally, I'm really interested in finding if this solution works for others or is a local thing.
Regards, KKlutzz

this website may help

This doesnt completely have everything to do with the prob, but I can tell you right now that having more than 30 processes running in task manager is almost a sure sign you have spyware on your puter. Maybe not in your case, you may just have a zillion programs running that you have installed. But be VERY VERY Leary as to what is running in background. As having so many processes running like that can SERIOUSLY slow your puter down, even if it show only 7-15% cpu usage. I have a MAXIMUM of 32 processes running and they are the bare minimum to run anything I need. But as for the this website it is www.theeldergeek.com , now this website HAS alot of GREAT information that works fantastic. It will tell you anything you want to know about tweaking and processes.you name it,this site has it. Anyways, have fun......SOULKILLER

zeroz06 April 11th, 2005 06:11 AM

Watching taskmanager, my machine runs about 95-98 percent idle. Run limewire, bang, 0 percent idle, 95 percent limewire. I'm sharing about 15 files as I'm new. There's a bug, no doubt. Didn't have any problems until I upgraded to 4.8.1. In other words, 4.6 ran just fine.

Lord of the Rings April 11th, 2005 06:21 AM

Hmm try a couple of things:
1. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire
2. Whilst LW is open click on the Progress bar on the downld window. This will arrange all files by %. Then scroll down to the 1st at 0% & select it. Then scroll down to the last one at 0% & whilst holding SHIFT key select this one also. So with all those incompletes at 0% selected, click the Stop button. Then go to your incomplete folder (outside of LW), view it in list mode & by size. Then delete all those at 0 KB. This will reduce a lot of drag on LW when you open it.

Also when you open LW, let it settle for 10, 20 or 30 mins before using. And don't use the Resume/Find Sources button on all your files b/c this WILL cause side-FX such as slowing down your comp & LW, perhaps affecting LW's connection quality, & maybe even affecting your modem.

thanks

Hello all, thank you for all your help. I followed the instructions that one of the guys give me about lowering resolution and setting it to 16 bit instead of 32 bit. Believe it or not it helped. SO I guess the problem doesn't reside in JAVA, it is NVIDIA drivers thats loaded on the system. Will have to wait for another version of nvidia drivers to come out and upgrade. Thanks guys....

kklutzz - thanks for the tip on sharing. I reduce the amount of files i'm sharing and suddeny woo computer is fast!! I'm not using pro either so it has to be a bug somewhere in the code which is common between both progs. Now just to get it to connect :P

help me out

Hey, when I run the program my cpu slows down. If I close it, the cpu goes back to the normal speed it normally went. But, one time occured when I was on the cpu like 1 A.M. The cpu began running at the normal speed even with LW on. I'm not willing to stay up past midnight just to see my cpu go back to the normal speed. What can I do?
